Been working some more on my load for the Yugo 24/47 for CMP vintage rifle matches. These matches are shot "as-issued" so you have to use the original sights, etc, no scopes, aftermarket peeps, etc. I have been shooting the Lee 175 gr. boolit with 18 gr. of 2400. Nice mild, accurate load but I found that at 200 yds. (which is what these matches are shot at) I had to either hold a fair amount of light below the target (a very low 6 o'clock hold) with the sight set at 700 or basically cover the bull with the front sight with the sights set at 600 in order to get it centered. Not condusive to precision shooting in position. I had 14 primed cases left over from a previous loading, so I loaded 7 rounds each with 19 and 20 grains of 2400. Hoping that a little more velocity would allow me a better sight picture.
Started with the 19 gr. load. 1st round with sights set at 600 and a center-of-mass hold shot just above the black at 12 o'clock. Went to a 6 o'clock hold and the next 6 made a nice 2" - 2 1/2" group at 6 o'clock in the X / 10 rings. [smilie=w:
Then shot the 20 gr. load. Using same hold, all 7 were inside the 10 ring and well centered, but the group was 3" - 4" and using ALL of the 10 ring. Not bad, but not as good as the 19 gr. load.

So, looks like 19 gr. of 2400 and a tight 6 o'clock hold and I should be shooting "clean" in slow fire prone!! :drinks:

Good Info. Thanks.

THe sight of an old M-48 Yugo Mauser are about 4" above the black of an SR-1 target at 100yds.
This is as low as the sight will go, and with surplus ammo.

16.0 to 18.0 grains of 2400 has been a go-to load in my G98/40 since about forever. I don't think I've tried 19.0 grains yet. Memo to self.......and many thanks!

Treerat, I don't have a chrono. I'm guessing right around 1700 fps.

9.3X62AL, yeah the 18 gr. load is just as accurate, and if I only shot at 100 yds. I would use that load. Going up to 19 gr. just gets me a better sight picture to hit center on the SR 200 yd. target. The 20 gr. load shoots very close to the sami POI but doesn't group quite as well in my rifle, but might shoot better in someone else's.

Are you using .323 or .325 sizing die? Also what is your OAL with the Lee bullet?
Thanks,
Jeff

My 24/47 has a tight chamber, throat and barrel. I size to .323 (the gun wont chamber them at .325). OAL = 2.850. Also, I lube with Lars BAC.

My lee drops at .325 with WW.

It is super easy to enlarge those dies to .325 or .326 or whatever. You will find yourself with a bunch of them in all sorts of custom sizes.:coffee:

Cause it wouldn't make much sense to make a .323 mold and a .324 sizer, would it? LOL

My mold drops them at just over .325 also.

Well, we had the CMP Military Bolt Rifle match this weekend. I was the only one shooting an 8mm and the only one shooting cast boolits. There was one Swedish Mauser and everyone else was shooting Springfields. The 24/47 didn't let me down. Came close to shooting clean in Prone slow fire, but not quite. I let 2 shots go a hair low and shot a 98-4X. Prone rapid and standing slowfire I didn't hold so well and was in the mid 80's on both of them, but overall not to bad. Finished with a 267 which was good enough for a bronze medal! :drinks:

Good shooting & thanks for the info. I'm getting ready to try the same boolit in my vz-24. Only differance, my mold drops at .324. Was going to start with 16grs but may go to 18 instead.
Mine has the heavy wide rifleings, will this make any differance?

I also have a Yugo but it has already been sporterized and scoped. I am casting a Lyman # 321297 which I believe is a 32 WIN bullet but is coming from the mold at .324 cast from wheelweights. I have been using a .325 sizing die just to apply lube and gas check. With 18 grs 2400 it will outshoot most of my other guns at 100 yards except the .222 mag and .223 with those nasty J-bullets.

Never dreamed that the mold would drop bullets that big. Anyone else with any experience on that bullet in an 8 mm?

thanks,

skt

George, I scored a 321297 on fleabay about 6 months ago. Only when it arrived I discovered that someone had drilled out the gas check shank and made it into a plain base! Mine drops nice boolits about .324 also. I have played around with a couple Trail Boss loads, but haven't found anything consistent with it. I'm going to work some more with other powders to see if I can find a good 100 yd practice load with it.
With a gas check, as it is designed, I don't doubt that is shoots just super.

I did score one of Ranch Dog's 32 molds before he quit selling them. Should make a nice hunting boolit, but I haven't cast any with it yet to see if it casts big enough for the 8mm.
