I went shooting Tuesday. Had the range to myself. Walked up to check my target and got a surprise. I had put three shots in a group measuring .75 inch. Right in the middle of the target.I got over my shock and took the target down. This was my first load with surplus 4895 powder. I used 33 grains. My rifle is a .30-30 nef handi-rifle I rechambered to AI. The bullet was a Lee C309-170RF. The kicker is, I was ready to settle on any load that came close to the aiming point. I wasn't trying for a good group. Does it count if I wasn't trying? I decided to settle on this load and not even try to improve it.
I'm a happy camper.

It just works like that. First load I shot out of my 16 inch TC barrel that I was going to shoot and get rid of was SO GOOD, I now have that over several barrels that I had bragged on before!

...............Tom, very nice! Surplus 4895 is defiantely one of the best out there for rifle cartridge use. I'd like to order a case of it myself as I'm into my last 8 lb jug. If I don't I'll be feeling the same as I did when WC852 went bye-bye. All I have to do is come up with the bucks 8)

I have a small ring Mauser in 7.62x39 and surp 4895 was the answer for me. A combination of excellent accuracy and great speed. A full case (28.0grs) delivers 1950 fps with the Lee C312-155-2R. A win - win combination.

I have found out that sometimes when you don´t try too hard you get nice groups.

When I was in military service I was in a shooting team of Armoured Brigade.
I was shooting mostly standard? rifle (Sako TRG 21 in .308 with aperture sights/2x10 shots at 300m in prone position with the sling) . We were once at the range and were running out of time and our Coach Officer told us to shoot the remaining rounds quickly. I shot those 20 rounds in maybe 10 minutes and I was amazed when we went to the targets. The result was 196 IIRC. The 10 ring of the target was roughly size of fist.

Jukka,

How's that 243 T38 shoot? You've shot it haven't you?

Were or are you a tanker, Jukka? Just curious because I served as a tank crewman on M41 Bulldogs in Alaska, and M60A1's elswhere many years ago.

Urny,

I wasn´t a real tanker. But I was a nco in mortar company. Those 120mm mortars were towed by soviet origin MT-LBv.http://www.mil.fi/maavoimat/kalustoesittely/index.dsp?level=102&equipment=69
The pics are from my former unit.
But I wore a Black Beret, which is a used only in armoured forces in Finland.

Joe,

I´ve shot the Sako T38 only once. I put 20 rounds through it. The light wasn´t the best possible for aperture sights, but managed to shoot 2" groups with commercial ammo at 100yd. I haven´t shot peep sights since the army. The trigger pull was also creepy.

Jukka,

That's good shooting. Can't wait till it's a bright day and see what you do then.

Thanks for the site, Jukka. I think that MT-LBV is in pretty wide use around the world, must a pretty dependable and versatile vehicle.

Finland's defense forces sure have a lot of websites devoted to them.

The Finns have every reason to be proud of their military, especially considering how they fought the Soviet Union in the Winter War and the Continuation War. The Finns may have lost the Karelian (sp) but the Soviets had a harder time with the Finns than with the Germans and the Finns weren't nearly as well armed. They nearly shot the Soviet airforce out of the sky using such planes as the Brewster Buffalo and took out Soviet armor with bottles full of gasoline, the famous Molitov cocktail. Don't ever take on the Finns, especially in the winter.

Yeah Jerry, and it's really starting to show. Started out down there in Louisiana in 1966 at Polk. Never want to see the place, again, as long as I live. LOL...Finished up here at Ft Lewis and just hung around.

Ft Polk alumnus myself. BCT in May of 67. Finished up Active duty in the Medical Corps in 87. Was at Madigan at Ft Lewis for the volcano's erruption. Last duty station was Willaim Beaumont AMC at Ft Bliss. Really like it around Ft Lewis. Beautiful country when the fog lift in the summer. Still have several friends in that area.
