I just picked up a modern-bond corp mold in .454 wadcutter, 270 grs.

Thought it'd make a dandy bear protection load. Anyone have any loading info?
Hoping for 900+fps in my S&W Mnt. gun. Thanks

9 grs of unique.
10 grs 800-x
these should be in the neighborhood of what you want.
that boolit should be pretty unstable by about 75 yds.

Stephen, I picked up a modern bond very similar to yours, but throws a smaller 220 gr full wadcutter. Numbers on the mold are 452-515. What are the numbers on yours. The sprue plate/sprue stop and handle bolts are both broken and probably non original on mine. Any chance I could get you to remove yours and take a photo of them? Measurements would be great too. In looking at mine, it almost apears that the two bolts would need to be a little different than each other for the sprue plate set up to work correctly. Lyman handles will work on mine. I jury rigged a setup on mine and was able to cast a few, but would very much like to get the bolts done correctly and get this mold into production. Thanks

Riverfun, Thanks, 2400 & unique were my powders of choice. I was thinking of starting around 8 w/ unique so it's nice to see that were in the same ballpark. As for range if I need it for it's intended purpose it'd be more like in the 7.5 yard range.

the attachment of the mold to the handles are w/ 2 screws 1.28" L w/ the bottom .7 unthreaded @ .125 dia. The stop screw has the threads removed from the top 3/16" which is above the mold half. Link to pic below (I figured you'd be the only one interested.) Hope it helps. Mine seems to be really well made and casts smooth.

Stephen - Sir - I have been shooting a .300 grain Keith type boolit from a Lee mold in a Ruger .45 Blackhawk (had the gun 25 years) with a 4 5/8" barrel loading 22 Grains of WW-296 (same as H-110) - which is 1 grain short of MAX.

APPROACH THIS LOAD VERY VERY CAREFULLY. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY HOT LOAD.

I have an old set of very large oversize Harret grips on this gun, a big hand and a very very strong hand grip and this is a VERY VERY STRONG LOAD and hard to tame. I loaded this round for a HOG Hunting Load. When this batch of 50 rounds are gone, you can rest assured I am going to drop this back 1 - 2 grains.

Food for thought - PLEASE APPROACH VERY CAREFULLY.

Dave Scoville says that using the RCBS 45-270-SAA with 13 gr. of Blue Dot is a good load in the 45 Colt ctg. Says speer pressured it at 20K CUP. that is what i use out of my 45lc S&W mtngun. since your mould is ~ the same weight, you might consider BD load as well. of course due to different bullet bearing lengths, etc. you might want to start at 11gr. then try 12 then 13 as indications permit. This pressure is not too much for the S&Ws i feel. especially the new ones with the updated steels and heat treat. besides, 45ACP +P is rated in the 21K CUP range and S&Ws 625s are rated for that so i suspect the 20K CUP in the 45LC mtn gun will be fine in the mtn gn too. 13 gr. of BD with the 45-270-SAA is about all i want to regularily shoot out of my mtn gun anyway. That's right on the verge of being too uncomfortable for shooting.

I use a lee 240 Grain WC mold/bullet with 6.0 grains of Bullseye in my Ruger--I get 900 FPS MV..darn good load.

Since you didn't say that your gun is infact 45LC. This is wat I am getting with my 7 1/2 " Bisley 45LC with 275gr Mt. Baldy FNPB bullets. 8.8gr Unique=1004fps 8gr W231=966fps 10gr #5=988fps 16gr 2400=967fps and 15.5 #9=947fps

I ran a Full Wadcutter style boolit mould in 44 caliber through Old West Bullet Moulds. Accuracy degrades quickly after 75 yds.

BUT

At 25 yds it will punch a perfectly round hole through 3, 5 gallon water 'cubes'. A definite bear stopper, hard hitter on whatever... Hogs included, I imagine.

That 45 cal one ought to do just as well, or probably more betta!
