TC Maxi Ball

In the Hawkin it just plain shoots

I have 2 Sabot rifles that are more accurate
But the scoped Hawkin somehow seems to be the rifle I grab when I want to put meat in the freezer

I like to paper patch the Lee 501-440-RF. This is a great hunting bullet and VERY accurate. Ron

Mine is the 50 cal Lee REALs. I have only tried Lee moulds though and have not tried my T/C yet but plan too. I tried the Lee Minies but they ar too tight and actually should come out a little smaller to work well but Lee makes them right at .50. Mine usually come out more like .502- .503.

Blammer, I would say that with that pic you need no further statements. A picture is worth a 1000 words. Later David

That's cool. I am very interested in paper patch, but I didn't know if it would work well with a front stuffer.

TC MaxiBall in my .50 cal Black Mountain Magnum because, cast of 16/1 lead/tin alloy, it hold up the the magnum load which pushes it at 1525 fps. Accuracy ain't too shabby at 100 yards either. That's actually 6 shots, one down the spout and the 5 speed loaders without cleaning or wiping between shots (Using FFG Triple 7). But then only the first one down the spout really counts with a ML anyways!

:coffee: Let's see here; firstly, I don't mould my black powder... too dangerous! :holysheep

On the other hand, when moulding bullets to use with BP loads, I like both the standard Minie and the Hodgdon version from RCBS for my Zouave and the old Lyman-Ideal pattern for Smiths and Maynards for my Maynard repro. The round ball moulds from Lyman seem fine for my C&B revolvers. :-D

My $19 lee twin .490 ...it sends more lead downrange than my maxiball/maxihunter moulds combined.....I cannot believe it took 14 posts for someone to say roundball.

delmar, I am using that bullet in a front stuffer. I paper patch the bullet and then I size it to .501 and it is ready. I load it over the top of 80 gr of Pyrodex P and I use a wool wad between the powder and bullet. Here is a picture of the gun, the bullet and my son with his deer. Ron

I was reading about the history of mini balls on the web today and it said something about the bullets having a hollow base to expand to engage the rifling. Is this in common use today? If not why not?

Mine's are harder to cast than the Maxi's. When fired, the soft lead Maxi base will slug up to take the rifling and seal the bore, anyway. I've used Maxi's in .36, .45 and .50 caliber. They're hard to beat. I did some experimentation with them some years ago versus round balls. In .50 caliber the Maxi's started from the muzzle 300 fps slower than the round balls, but by 50 yards the Maxi took over for trajectory and velocity. By 75 yards the RB had dropped 6 inches farther than the Maxi, and couldn't even come close in energy. That big chunk of soft lead cuts a clean, round entrance hole to promote bleeding and will punch through about any animal on the continent, with the possible exception of an Alaskan Brown Bear.

Yeah, lots of deer and elk have been killed with a round ball, but in the world of physics, mass rules in a collision. This is why Elmer Keith was so fond of large caliber rifles. And a Maxi is about twice as massive as a RB of the same caliber. Given the same velocity, the Maxi wins, hands down.

Stew

He was also fond of hunting with a .44 revolver!
Want to hear a cool story?
Years ago I worked at a rehab hospital in Boise ID, and Elmer Keith was a patient of mine. He couldn't talk any more because he had suffered a stroke, but he showed me his photo in Gun's & Ammo!
