I thought I'd share my .44 bulldog H&R for my first post. I cut down .44 special brass to reload this diminutive round. 210 grain heeled bullets, and about two grains of powder, cartridge is 25mm tall. Original specs were 450fps and 80ft lbs of muzzle energy, you can literally hear the gun fire and then later the bullet hitting the target. I would imagine this would have been an effective card table gun, you would have time to run until the guy you knocked off his chair got up. :~) What do you think? I believe the little bulldog is the only .44 that was actually .440

I like it, but then most strange/unusual firearms appeal to me. Welcome to our patch.

..............That's a sure nuff neat looking ole shooter! Some pretty dazzeling ballistics too. Lessee, my Iver Johnson breaktop in 38 S&W does about 450 fps with a 146gr group buy slug so the energy must be a butt kicking 42 ft pounds :-) It'd sure raise a welt.

Nice. Unless the BG is wearing a lot of heavy clothing that 210 gr boolit at 450 fps is going to go right trough to his vitals. Change that pointed boolit to a FN or WC and he'll know for sure his end is near!

How about some more pics of the old girl?

Neat gun. I found a couple of old cartridges a few months ago and one of them was the 44BD. I thought that it was a diminutive looking cartridge. Then I found out that it was the cartridge that was used to assasinate James Garfield? I guess looks can be deceiving...

Nice thread Mark.

What mould are you getting that boolit from? Show us a pic of it please.

Good pix, interesting gun. I have heard that the .44 rimfire was feared because you would
take about a week to die of infection if gutshot with one. I suspect that this bad boy was
in the same category. Prior to modern medicine, gutshot with a .22 short could be deadly,
and not in a pleasant way.

I buy them pre made, I have not been able to find a true mold yet.

I buy them pre made, I have not been able to find a true mold yet.

You might investigate Dixie Gun Works. The mold might be one that casts a conical boolit for the ML revolvers (small pliers type brass that go in cased sets). I've seen one that had a 0.440" band in front of the shank before.

This is a great looking pistol, and I do love these old ones. Somehow our ancestors managed to get through gunfights with a handful of cast boolits over black powder, while if the advertising is to be believed we need several 17 round magazines filled with JHPs, laser sights, and rail mounted flashlights. The ballistic tables on these may not look like much, but I doubt you'll find any volunteers to take a couple of them just to prove how ineffective they are.

Hey Mark, I like what you have done. I know you are having fun.

I am shooting a very short (.805 OAL ) cartridge in my home built Volcanic.

Heh.. In the old days it was worse if the bullet only went part way thru ya, then the 'ol doc would kill ya diggin' it out! or you'd get gangrene :)

You might have to pull one from the case and have a cherry made, but a mold can be had. Lee Precision among others can make them. Cool gun!
