Anybody here use a laser/no contact thermometer for their casting activities? I don't have a lead thermometer, and I have a chance to pick up a laser model for small bucks. It would be useful for some other projects. Just wondering if it will work well for casting.

I have one, and it does not work for a couple of reasons.

1) It tops out at 500* F.

2) It reflects off shiny things like new aluminum molds and lead. The instructions say to spary paint what you are checking with flat black paint.

I use it to check the temp of my molds as I cast. I find between 250 and 300 is good for the bottom of the mold.

I have a Raytek that goes to 1200 degrees. I guess I am going to have to heat up a pot a check it out as I never give it any thought. I have used it mostly on mechanical repairs and tested against live guages is quite accurate. Great for finding a dead cylinder. I will try it and let you know. Boon

Thanks, fellas.

Boon, if it doesn't trouble you too much, I'd be interested to know.
