I scored big on a trade with the pa in-law yesterday. I came home with a Colt Police Positive in .32 Police CTG (.32 S&W Long). I'm trying to date it as to the year of production. He knows the ownership of it back as far as the late '30. The SN is 118XXX. According to http://proofhouse.com/colt/index.html that would date it to 1914. However one of the patent dates on the top of the barrel is Oct 5 1926. Has any one got a clue that may help? It looks just like this one, with slightly less bluing

based on your picture....

this looks like a Colt Pocket Positive Double action....circa 1905 to 1940
the words Pocket Positive should be stamped on the left side of the barrel near the frame

it could also be a Colt Police Positive Double action....circa 1905 to 1947

My Colt's date bok shows this serial number as 1914 for a police positive.

With the date stamped on the barrel I would think someone swapped it out?

Colt produced these guns until 1943 so if the barrel went bad or was cut down as a snubbie someone may have decided to replace it?

Just a thought. These are nice guns take care of it.

Lucky dog! I've been looking for something like that for years.

I know a guy that dated an old nag once, but not an old colt...
