In regards to the S&W long and short. Are you able to fire both in a hand gun made for the long? I'm thinking in the way that the .357 mag will also fire the .38 special.

My uncle used to do it all the time.

Not only that.......the recently-hatched 327 Federal can safely fire the named cartridge it is chambered for--as well as the 32 H&R Magnum, 32 S&W Long, and 32 S&W.

I believe the answer is yes. I just bought a .327 Federal. According to what I have heard, the .327 Federal will fire the .32 H &R magnum, the .32 Smith and Wesson long, .32 S & W and... the .32 ACP as it is reportedly a semi-rimmed case. Someday I may try them all.

Yes, absolutely. The .32 S&W Long is merely a longer, more powerful version of the earlier .32 S&W. Since they are both straight-sided cases, you can safely chamber the shorter cartridge and fire it in a gun chambered for the Long. If you don't have an owner's manual, you may be able to download one, and it will confirm this.

My owner's manual for the Ruger SP-101 in .327 Federal Magnum specifically states that it is safe to fire .32 H&R Magnum, .32 S&W Long, and .32 S&W cartridges in this firearm, as well as any .327 round. I have fired all but the shortest--the .32 S&W--in it with good results.

Happy shooting!

Again, absolutely yes. Have fired both S & W short, long, & H & R 32 mag in a ruger single six. Also used to have S & W 32 military & police. It digested the S & W long & short just fine. Just remember to clean your cylinder after shooting a lot of the shorter rounds to remove any build up so that the longer rounds will chamber easily. Does no harm except aggravation.
