I really like my 20" 480 Puma - but think the ideal "walking" gun would be a 500 S&W lever in stainless with a 16" barrel and Hi-Vis sights. Saw the H&R 500 - looks OK but I would prefer a lever. Seem to recall reading that Puma (LSI) was going to bring one of these to the table, but I can't find it. Just vaporware?

If you go to the LSI site it says that they are going to have the Puma made in Italy now and they dropped my favorite caliber the .454 Casull. I have a .357 and a .454 and I love them both the .454 in a rifle make a "baby 45-70" with a 400 grain lead bullet in front of a full load of lil'gun. I want to try it on hogs down in south Missouri.

the 92 is a strong gun but a 500 might just be too much of a good thing.

Rossi is now going to make the 454. It is not called the "Puma" anymore, just the Rossi 92. You have to download the Rossi catalog and on page 7 or 8 they talk about the 16 and 20" stainless carbines. But what was a little dissapointing is that it said nothing about the HI-VIS sights from the factory. I am going to get a 16" stainless for myself once I get home. IMHO that is the perfect combination of easy carry, and having a BIG stick!!!!!

the problem youd run into is the barrel would be to thin where the threads are that screw into the action. Ive got a 475 linebaugh custom built on a 94 marlin and it too has this flaw and because of it i wont run all out full power loads in it. Same problem exists on my 50 alaskan marlin. But that round is a lower pressured round anyway. the 500 smith runs some pretty high pressures with factory stuff and i dont think id trust it even if it could be done.

My Puma has the Hi-Vis sights, and I really like them.........however:

They have the colors arraigned wrong. The green is very bright (being in the middle of the spectrum - see green laser vs red laser), whereas the red is somewhat darker (way to the high range of visible light). Puma put the green dots on the rear - close to the eye - which makes them appear even brighter. The red tube is at the front which makes it appear smaller and less bright.

Wish I knew where to get the replacements - should have green in front and red at the rear.

lets see, the 454 puma seems to have some issues, like stretching. the 500 will not fit in a 92 period. someday soon you will se a modern lever gun that will shoot either cartridge.

Rossi's in the process of re-engineering a shipping box for it, to contain a pillow to strap on the user's butt - maybe an inflatable. ;) :groner:

I've been shooting a .454 Puma with "warm" loads for several loads for several years. The only problem that has shown up is I have not been able to retreive any cast bullets from game, they are all through and through. Jr. in LA, who's on this site has shoot his alot and checked it and found no wear. Where did you get this info. I am planning on hunting some Hogs down in south MO, maybe I'll get a used slug to look at.

the 480 i bought to do some testing, stretched .013 on the first firing session. the headspace was in excess of .025 to start. another shooter with a 454 says he has send it to a gunsmith to" get it working again". i will not shoot one ever again.
