I posted this question on the saiga 12 forum but figure i can give yall a shot at helping. I picked up some 300 gr cast bullets at a gunshow over the weekend. I use IMR 800-X for my jacketed load and was hoping i might be able to use it for these bullets. I load for a S&W 629-1 with an 8" barrel. The Min overal length is 1.720" for the other 300 gr cast bullet loads in my book. so i set up my die to seat to slightly over this and made sure it still fit in my cyllender. I am wondering if anyone has used 800-X for a 300 gr bullet before and if so where should i start. i am just punching paper so i dont care about having great velocity just safe pressures and a round that goes bang. My load book has a starting load of 11.9 gr 800-X for a 240 gr lead bullet, would it be crazy to use this as a starting point for the 300gr bullet? it was suggested on the saiga forum that i use h110. does anyone have data for that with a 300 gr cast bullet. I will be going back to a 240 gr either lead or jacketed bullet after i use the 300 gr bullets. I just want to use the 100 i bought so they dont go to waste. I also have a Marlin 1894ss but the min overal length doesnt allow for me to use these for it. if anyone knows of a load that would be awesome. I know the safest thing is to use load data from the powder company. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

i use 10.5 of it with a 240 gr load and 12 under a 250.
i think you should be okay to start about 10 gr 800-x is just a bit slower than unique.
if you have any 2400 try 17 grs of that.
for your marlin if it needs the boolit seated out further just do it it will actuallyy lower your pressure you can always load them single for just punching paper.
if they need to be seated a bit deeper just back the powder down a tad the deeper you go.

go to Hogdons and look up H110 and IMR site for 800x -for years I used nothing but 800x from very low ans slow to higher hunting loads -- I like the stuff--since all I shoot is .41 s I am no help on the .429

thanks for the help thus far.

since 800-x is a faster burning powder shouldn't i be ok shooting a reduced load? I only have 800-x on hand. should i try 9.0 gr to be on the safe side? i am most concerned about not blowing up my gun. I am not planning on reloading, with these bullets, for my 1894 since it has a maximum overal case length of 1.610 (if i remember correctly) and the 300 gr loads in my booksay minimum overal case length is 1.720. so i am just going to go with a 1.720 lenght cartridge in my 629.

thanks again for the help and keep the ideas coming.
