Took some time to get started, but I'm now up and running with a basic set up to smelt lead and cast boolits. I'm using a hot plate, cast iron pan with a Lee 175 gr. 8mm mold. Days like today, I smelt the lead wheel weights while running the lawn mower and other days, I cast boolits while smoking a cigar and listening to the Rat Pack. I would like to thank everyone who has posted their ideas and thoughts for me to read on the subject of this great hobby. Without your knowledge and wisdom, I'd still be dreaming about casting instead of doing it.

I call this one "Fritz" as he was one of the first I poured.

Wilco, You must have a few years on you. Talking about the RAT PACK. The bullets in your tray that are shiney and have rounded edges are not keepers. You want all driving bands to have fill out with sharp edges. If using WW's you might want to add tin for rifle bullets.

Good for you! Proof you don't need big dollars toys to play the game.

BTW- I'm a mere baby around here at 49, but my listening includes Brook Benton and Dinah Washington, Glenn Miller, Django Reinhardt and Woody Herman. He might not be ancient, just has good taste!

Thanks for the heads up Cajun Shooter. Still time to get them out of the batch as they're sitting in a baggy. :-D As for years on me, I'm just coming up to 39 this August albeit, a little fatter than last year......:mrgreen:

Hey! Where's Jo Staford in your hit parade? Love that music. Take a little, humbley offered advice. Don't leave your cookin's unattended. We just had a member burn his barn down. And don't smoke or eat while messing with lead. Given half a chance, I'd be doing both, but good sense tells me not to. A wee bit of trivia: Tear gas is colorless. When you see a CS or CN grenade pop, it's an effusion of smoke and heat. The smoke is only the vehicle used to carry the gas to the target. The little tear gas particles ride the winds on the backs of little smoke particles and are readily sucked into the lungs causing the intended effect. Same for lead vapors. Cast in an effeciently vented area, wash your hands before putting stuff in your mouth, and grab a smoke after the job is done. Advice from an old central New Yorker lookin' out for you western guys.

When I'm done smelting, I just leave the lead to cool a bit in the cast iron pan and then drop them out. Makes for a pre-measured ingot of sorts......

Also, thanks for the heads up John Guedry & 725.
