I have read earlier threads where some of you use Lyman 311299 in your Garands and/or 1903-A3's. I have some on hand and I want try 4895 (have IMR not H on hand) starting out with 28 gr. and also using .5 gr. - .75 gr. of Dacron filler. What OAL are you guys using?

Thanks.

I just seat them till the gascheck is at the bottem but still inside of the neck.
To function the action on my Garand it took 35 grains of H4895, in cold weather 37 grains was not 100% reliable functioning.
Right now I'm fooling around with paper patching in the Garand.
Others on this board use a reduced load of slower powder. to get function and accuracy.
I plan to try the slower powders but still waiting to get some.
I'm to cheap to pay retail and everybody's hoarding....my day will come.

That makes sense. Thanks. Anybody else :coffee:

You may be aware of this, but be careful about using reduced loads of powders slower than 4895. Make sure you have read up on Secondary Explosion Effect, or SEE.

Thanks for the warning. For now I am going to stick with 4895, starting out with 28.0 gr. It is a starting load that several others men on this forum have posted .

I think it may depend on your individual Garand. Mine runs 100% with charges of 4895 as low as 30 grains.

Since this will be my first attempt with cast bullets in my Garand, I will be using the sled. I hope to find a sweet spot between 28 - 35 grains. Thanks to all for the assist. I took Monday off so I hope to be at the range tomorrow morning. I will be trying the same load in both my 1903-03 and my Garand.

My current M1 load is LC 66 case, 32.1 gr IMR4895, Lyman 311299 fired by a Winchester Magnum cap. OAL is 3.300. The use of a magnum primer cut velocity extreme spread in half and cut group size dramatically. Velocity with this load runs 1722.

I tried the magnum primer when this load gave hangfires in cold weather. It proved to help consistancy and accuracy so much I use them all the time now in reduces charges of standard burning rate powders.

4895 under a 311284 goes just great with a loading of 29 to 32 gr. Dacron filler and lars 45 lube kept the gun clean and working.

A properly oiled and greased action is important and the Garand is a hoot to shoot with cast. You are on the right track.

Hi, Old Lyman Handbook of Cast Bullets lists 37 grains of 4895 operating the action dependably. Don't know about the accuracy though. I"ve been using #311284 with 40 grains of IMR 3031; runs the action well and shoots a decent group (for a stock Garand) Close fit in the mag with these long bullets and have to seat them a tad deep in the necks. Le Loup, you probably missed the follow up string/range report on this. http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=55930&highlight=3112998-)

Thanx Tejano for the update on range results. Its great to make less of a bang in the gun, save some powder so that it goes a longer ways and get the job done with good accuracy. Keep up the good work. LLS

The use of the dacron filler with the 4895 enhances ignition and thus gives higher pressures than without the dacron filler. A load of 30 gr with filler may operate the action where it may take a load of 37 gr 4895 without the dacron filler to function the rifle. The load with the dacron filler with have a much more consistant time/pressure curve and usually produces better accuracy. Using the dacron filler I've had M1s function with as low as 28 gr of 4895 and a couple take as much as 34 gr when using 311299. That's why I recommend starting at 28 gr and working up in 1/2 gr increments until reliable functioning is achieved.
