It has been a long road to try and find anything to shoot in this rifle (AR50), but I have at least found one load that works. One out of 20 tried. 200 rounds thru this beast gets tiring, not to mention $$ with primers at $0.30 a pop.

I have a MM 700gr slug that hasn't worked yet, a 735gr Hoch mould(RCBS 35-200 upsized) that trys to shoot now and then and the 975gr CBE mould that has been the most frustrating so far. Only the MM comes to spec on the nose/body. The Hoch is barely .512" body, but only .497" on the nose, and the CBE started out .5105"/498" with 11bhn alloy. My gun is .5103"/.4995".

I tried WW alloy, both WC and AC, then went to WW/lino in a 5/1 ratio, in both WC and AC, no change. MM groups about 4", Hoch mould would finally throw a 2.5" group and the CBE was doing good to shoot a 10" group. Talked to Jim at CBE and he said it should throw a .512/500" with 12Bhn, but didn't. Seemed the gun likes the WC 5/1 the best, so thought I would add some more linotype. Went to a 5/3ratio ww/lino, and thats where things changed.

Hoch mould came up to .498" on the nose and the CBE came up to .4998" on the nose and .511" on the body. Still a little undersized as would prefer a .513" as I size to .512"

Cast up some boolits with the Hoch and CBE moulds, both AC and WC. Tumble them with a moly lube (Bullet master--from long ago). then lightly coat with LLA thinned, so to make a thin film on the boolits. Checked with 50cal gator checks and lubed with a moly blend lube (3orange magic/2lyman moly/1spg) that works fairly well.

Went to the range yesterday with some Hoch and CBE boolits loaded. Tried the Hoch first with 226gr VV 20n29. First two shots were in the same hole almost. THAT got my attention, but didn't continue as others were mainly 2" to the right with a verticle spread, but did put another in the hole with the first two. Gonna have to play with that powder some more. Load is on the low side.

Second group shot was with 208gr 5010 and the CBE boolit. NO JOY. Group was about 12". Same as most loads with this boolit.

Last load was 190gr 5010 w/CBE boolit. Pic below was six shots @100yds. Raining with a 10mph wind at 8:30.

Looks like you`ve got a "Rainy Day Load"! I`ve heard the big "50" can be a real hair puller to develop a load for. I also have heard that it can take the fired projectile 100 yds. to stabilize after firing, can`t verify that fact although I`ve heard it said more than once. Nice group just the same with that load. Bit additional info. Went up in charge weight and re-shot the heavy slug, but only had three rounds for the target and one for the chrony. Group size was like the three outside shots on the above target. Velocity was 2151fps, so earlier group was closer to 2000fps. Shot some of the Hoch mould boolits and some MM boolits (I cast the MM yesterday). Velocities were 2378fps and 2401fps respectively. Hoch put three in a cloverleaf with two about 2 inches out at 5 and 7 o'clock. MM boolits was about 4" wide x 1" high. Had a 10mph wind at 8 with some mirage.

More work with the lighter boolits.

Have you run that lube in other high velocity cast loads?
Seems like bp and pistol lubes would handle 2k fps reliably. Maybe a hard high speed lube would help?

Good job so far. Don't get too frustrated. In my opinion you are pioneering as I can't find any good data on CB and the big 50.

975 grains. wow
