Has anyone used a bullet from a Lyman 446187 (470 gr) mold as a paper patch bullet for 45-70?

I have one I use for my 71/84 Mauser and am considering trying to use it as a paper patch bullet for a Pedersoli Sharps with Black powder.

Cast dimensions of my bullet with wheel weight alloy gives a nose diameter of .433 and a body diameter of .451. I have not cast any pure lead with this mold yet but I'm figuring my as cast dimensions with pure lead should give me a nose diameter of around .432 and a body diameter of .450. I'll be sizing the body of the bullet to .446

I'm figuring that two wraps of .002 paper should put me back up to around .454 for the body. If the paper patch is long enough to cover the bullet nose with the patch up to the beginning of the ogive the nose diameter should be up to around .450. I would then size the body of the bullet in a .450 die giving a bullet with an overall diameter of .450.

I'm figuring any slop on the small side would be taken up buy obturation upon ignition.

What do ya'll think?

Have Fun,

I have the 44 370 FN RCBS boolit mould. I have a sample that I cast of fairly hard metal that measures .449-.450 on the driving bands and .440 on the base of the nose. I will try some soft castings wrapped with two wraps of .002" paper and size to .458 for smokeless loads. Gotta work. Hopefully the diameter comes out to nearly .450 on the base of the nose. I have previously wrapped the RCBS .439 boolit for the .43 Spanish with the same paper to shoot in the 71 84 Mauser and had excellent results. I havent convinced myself that bore diameter boolits expected to obturate is the way to go. Course I don't use the black stuff.
I have an old 45 70 Navy Arms/Pedersoli Roller to shoot em in.
Thanks for giving me a push.

I size my 45-70s to .4515, wrap with 2 wraps of 16# printer paper and size to .460 in a .459 die. works great with smokeless.

I think your idea will work just fine. I have a mold for my 45-70 Sharps that casts a bullet with a 0.006" taper from base to nose at 0.446" to 0.440". It is then patched up to 0.008" more with 100% cotton 9 lb. onion skin paper. It shoots as well as the Lyman 457125 500 grain bullet, or maybe just a little better. I have found it amazingly shoots well with smokeless as well, but I only shoot BP with it and did the smokeless loads just for experimentation. Your bullet may not have the taper, so perhaps it cannot be seated as far out as mine, but it ought to work out just fine. I found that seating the bullet as far out as practical gave me the best results. In other words, I have the paper patch touching the leade with only a slight push required to chamber the round. Hope this helps and encourages!

1874 Sharps,

Thanks for the encouragement. I have taken several of these bullets and wrapped and sized them. When sized in a .446 die they come out at .447/448 and slide pretty well into the bore of my 45-70. However there is still a lot of the bullet nose that is not supported and I suspect that upon firing would slump to one side or the other and destroy any accuracy.

I checked the fit in the 71/84, 11mm Mauser and it looks like that might be worth a try as there is apparently more support of the nose.

I'll keep messing with it and come up with a solution sooner or later.

Have Fun,
