I'm contemplating buying a mold for my BFR chambered in .500 S&W. I've had some leading issues (BAD in the forcing cone) with Montana Bullet Works 375 gr. SWC's. The throats won't allow a .501" bullet to be pushed through so sizing isn't the issue. That L-O-N-G cylinder means the bullet has to jump approx. 1.3" to get to the rifling and THEN it's got to start spinning.....:)

This gun is very accurate with the 375 SWC (despite the leading) and also the 410 LFNGC and I'm thinking about getting an RCBS plain base 400 grain mold. Unique, Blue Dot and HS6 have all performed very well so far at the 1200 fps velocity that I plan to load at.

Do any of you folks have any experiences casting for the BFR?? Any recommendations??

I load for the 45-70 BFR and it has a long jump also. I get zero leading and extreme accuracy.
My only suggestion is to use a slower powder so full pressure is not developed before the boolit hits the forcing cone. A heavier boolit can also help.

Do you have an opinion on the 400 gr. RCBS? I imagine a little tinkering with alloys and sizing will produce something workable but it will cost about $80 (die and .501 Lee sizer) to find out. Even if there is some leading a couple of jacketed rounds down the spout usually loosens things up enough that most of it can be brushed out.

You can try the Lee 501-440 in your BFR. Cost you about $40 then. Working on these boolits in my 50 Beowulf and plan on trying them in my 50AE BFR.
