View Full Version : .30-06 & .308 jacketed loads with Trail Boss?

I have read posts of people that contacted IMR/Hodgdon asking for Trail Boss loads with jacketed bullets and they responded that it is for cast boolits only and that they had no data for either of these calibers.

Well, I was just looking at Hodgdon's online reloading data and lo and behold there is Trail Boss data for 150 Nosler BT in both .30-06 and .308. Interesting. Anyone ever shoot TB with jacketed bullets?

Yes. Like Red Dot, bullseye, etc., works fine. Just have to use suitably light loads, as you know. In theory the fast acceleration out of the case COULD rip the jacket off the bullet but with FMJs I have yet to see it. A half jacket bullet? Maybe.

I was originally of the opinion that TB was for cast bullets only. But I learned that it CAN be used with jacketed bullets - due care exercised, of course.

What the Hodgdon folks told me is that the one thing that causes TB to get spiky with pressures is compression. So do NOT load to 100% or more case volume.

i have launched 200 gr bullets with unique in my 8 mauser for a vel of around 1800 fps.
this was in my pre cast in rifle days.
shot dang low but was very accurate.

What the Hodgdon folks told me is that the one thing that causes TB to get spiky with pressures is compression. So do NOT load to 100% or more case volume.

Thats what I have read elsewhere also. Doing some figuring, they list 19 gr. of TB for 1477 fps and 26,400 psi in the 30-06 with the 150 gr. Nosler. The 06 has a capacity of about 4.35 cc dividing that by the TB VMD of .2172 gets 20 gr. as a "case full". So it looks like the Hodgdon data is case full with a little room to prevent compression. It appears to be a similar situation with their .308 load of 14 gr.
What also strikes me is the low pressures with a case full. About half the max. pressure limits of the caliber. So, it appears that you could use the same formula for just about any bullet (or boolit) in cases of this size. Figure out where the base of the bullet seats and fill it up to just below that so there is no compression. I imagine that velocity with cast boolits will be a little higher, 1500 fps or better, so gas checks would probably be a good idea with these "max" loads.
Looks like I may have to do some more work with TB in the '06 and the 8mm.

I load a 220 gr. bullet over 12 gr. Trailboss in a 30-06 gives about 1100 fps. Great for plinking out to about 75 yards.

A friend contacted Hodgdon a few ears ago re data for his 405. They told him straight wall cases only and load to 60% density. Interesting that that has changed.
