I picked up an iron mould marked 318451 SC. Don't let the 318xxx fool you. It actually casts out as a plain base 506 gn .451 caliber flat round nose with 1 crimp groove and 4 lube grooves.

I don't think it will fit in my 45 ACP, as it's a mite too long at 1.243 inches.

Any ideas... maybe black powder?

Well, Lyman assigned cherry #451 to the 465451 which is a 488 grain FN. For what rifle I don't know./beagle

Several mould makers ID'd their molds like that- Rapine comes to mind.

A fellow in our gun club thinks it may be for a .45 caliber Confederate sniper rifle. He saw one last year at our range, but can't remember any details other than it had a long tube type scope and that it was a replica.

Lyman 465451 seems to fit the description you provided. This bullet had a very thin base band with a large lube groove and what appear to be 3 thin lube groves ahead of it. It most likely was an Ideal mold. Are the mold and the handles one piece?
