I agreed to come up with some hunting loads for my dad's 1891 Mauser. I came across some information that basically said that the sights were set to hit 4" high at 100yards with a 180gr or so bullet going about 2400fps. The norma 150gr load was extremely high at 100 yards.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a load that would shoot approximately to the sights?

180 gr. jacketed with 41.0 gr. of IMR 4895 does about 2370 fps in a 1909 short rifle for me to the sights.

Had a 7.65 1891 Argentine, but had it rebarreled to 257 Roberts. Remember a post about Norma ammo being made for 1909 Argentines, and had higher velocity than original ammo for 1891's. Post went on to say, Norma pressures may be too high for 1891 Argentines. If a 7.65 Argentine is a 7.65 X 53 Mauser then Hodgdon says with a 174gr Hornady RN use start load of:
43 gr H4350.......Vel 2266 41.5 gr H380.....Vel 2232 37 gr H4895....Vel 2072

45 2.1's load is a good one for use with the issue sights.

If you got the extra high Mauser sight from Brownells you could use it for hunting and then replace the original when not hunting. However if shaped correctly the higher sight (filed down and shaped to zero at 200 yards with a good hunting or target load) is hardly noticeable as differentfrom the original. You still have the original to replace if you sell the rifle. The 150 gr .312 Hornady over 47 gr 4895 is a very good deer load out of my M91 rifle with 29.25" barrel. It runs 2922 fps which puts it into the '06 class and duplicates the Norma factory velocity. The 180 .311 Sierra over 44 gr 4895 runs 2564 fps in my rifle and also is very accurate and a good hunting load.

To keep in the spirit of this forum the Lyman 311299 with Hornady GC (sized .312 and javelina lubed) over 27 gr 4895 with a 1 gr Dacron filler runs 1816 fps and shoots 1 1/2 MOA at 100 yards. With the long barrel my old eyes can still focus on the front sight and I can still shoot that good.

Larry's 311299 with 4895 and dacron is a damn good load. Use it myself.

Personally, before rebarreling my 1891, most of the ammo I shot was Norma. Info on Norma being possibly dangerous in 1891 actions was from a man that is a senior poster on the Mauser Forum and one other site that I know of. Because he is so knowledgeable and regarded, just thought I'd pass on his comments.
