Hands down, I swear to god Im only buying one mold for my Ruger No. 1. West Virginny and Pennyslvania deer hunting.... which mold? Generally, I use wheel weights, and Im trying to avoid the gas check thing if I can help it.

Thanks. Lets hear it...

First and foremost, please refrain from using the Lord's name in vein/vain. Use any of the 405 grainers for the least fuss and bother in making a good load right from the start. There is no need for a gas check using the most appropriate powders when NOT water dropping the boolits from the mold. ... felix

I must agree.

I must agree.

+2 BTW the Lee 405gr. is a fine bullet from pure clip ons.

Lee's 459-405-HB. It's cheap; it casts big enough; and it's ungodly accurate.

Lyman 457122 if you don't mind casting hollowpoints. That's the Gould, it's flat based.
OTOH, you can get a good 405 in a 6 cavity!

I use the Lee 325 gr rf with a smallish flat nose. Casts .460 and 333 gr in my alloy. I poked a deer with it traveling around 1300fps. Pass through the boiler room leaving 1" or so wound. Life leaked out fast. This boolit shoots good out of every gun I have tried it in. Sized down for .45 Colt it works good also. I prefer light boolits in 45-70 for close work. I have a 452423 that casts fat. Beagled it will drop .457 and with soft alloy shoots well in 45-70. I love this boolit but have never killed with it. (yet)

I would agree 100% with the 405 grain HB Lee boolit. I shoot the 405 and the 340 grain Lee boolit in my 45/70 and couldn't ask for a better boolit. I like to shoot the 340 grain because of less recoil but mainly because it takes less lead to make but for hunting and having to pick just one it would be the 405.

I saw nothing in your post that I thought was takeing the Lord's name in vain. On the other subject .... with my 2 45/70's ( One of which is a Ruger #1 ) I have taken deer with 385 gr. RNGC ( Lyman 457483 ), 335 gr. HP ( Lyman 457122 ) and a custom 440 gr. mold from Dan at Mountain Molds. None of the deer could tell you a difference between bullets. Remember ... you don't need high velocity with a 45/70 and a cast bullet to kill deer. Size your bullets to your rifle and find a good load between 1250 fps and 1600 fps that you can live with. Then ... shoot all the deer you care to drag home.

Rcbs makes a 325 gr. plainbase mold Holds a little more lube than the Lee. Iron mold, Costs more, too Would be plenty bullet for deer & hogs. I f you wanted to, drive any of the plain base base mold bullets at higher speeds with softer lead you could paper patch 'em:castmine:

Can you paper patch a boolit with lube grooves?

Get a 477122HP and if you don't want to cast HPs.....have Buckshot make you an attachable plug that makes "solids". Personally, I'd rather shoot the HPs as I seldom blast that many .45/70s and the 457122's a definite winner./beagle

Jim, all I patch is grooved castings. I get great results with them. I am very satisfied.
I guess the answer is yes indeed.

Would paper patching be a solution for boolits that cast slightly undersized?

That's a good question. I would like to know the answer to this myself.

Jim, all depends on what is 'slightly undersized' - your land & groove diameters and whether you shoot smokeless or black powder.

Yes PP'ing can be done for what you say is undersized. Smokeless rounds at or + 0.001 over bore (land diameter) and blackpowder 0.003 over bore

Obturation is the issue into the grooves

... all depends on ....... and whether you shoot smokeless or black powder. Why would that be? Using the identical boolit?

The specific example would be boolits that cast at .3565 to fit a .358 bore.

Just find some strong wettable paper that is the right thickness. If they come out too large size them back to whatever size you like and have a sizer for. Most folks have it easier using the Lee push through sizers but either will work.
