View Full Version : Buying jackets

Has anyone ever contacted the various bullet manufacturers to see if they would sell jackets to us? Right now, I assume they cannot keep up with demand so I doubt they would have any interest at all. Maybe if the demand lightens, they would entertain selling jackets to us. If that ever occurs, I wonder if anyone on the forum would happen to know folks at the manufacturing plants and give them a call and maybe have a group buy organized?

I have been messing around with a copper foil that I got at a hobby shop and my old Herter's swaging press and have been making some crude .38, .357, and 9mm jackets. I then swage then with my CH dies. They turn out okay, but I would rather find a decent source of jackets for less that $.03 or $.04 each and just swage and shoot.

Anyway, just something to keep in mind to see if it would have any value to us in the future.

Try Bruno shooters supply.

I just looked at Bruno's. They only go up to .30 and seem costly. I need .35 for 9mm, .38 and .357 plus .45 ACP.

I was considering buying a swaging die from the shooters shack to try my hand at making some bullets for mt .38 super , However the name that was given to me as a supplier of copper cups for pistol rounds quoted .12-.14c per at quantity of less than aprox 15 000 pcs and .10- .12 per above that . At that cost it is more expensive to buy jackets than manufactured bullets even when I factor in the cost of shipping from the U/S!

I feel your pain, but I don't think anyone on this forum will claim it is the most economical way to make projectiles, as it more towards the accuracy and weight control, and ability to make your own if no longer manufactured. Plus the warm fuzzy feeling of saying I did it myself.

And the way things're going Blaser.306 and everyone else that reads this board, those hard times might just be not too far away! :Fire:

If you find jackets for $.03 - $.04 each please let us know. The best I have seen for a 9 mm/ 38 jacket is around $.06 - $.07 each plus shipping.

You might have a chance with the group purchase idea though. If you call any of the bullet companies and get any good quotes, let us know.

J4 IS the most reliable supplier for bullet jackets. They are owned by Berger Bullets and I think Berger is now the contact point for sales. THEY ARE NOT CHEAP and have a minimum order policy!!!! I bought 15K in 6MM a couple of years ago because of a price point break and still have a few left. Sierra also sells Matchking jackets in 22 and 6MM for sure and may be selling 30's now as well, but not on a regular basis. I have not bought any from them in several years. The only other reliable supplier I know of is Corbin. Their jackets are more expensive than the other two and not as good of quality, but for hunting quality bullets are just fine.

I buy corbins jackets,... 175.00/1300....
I figure I will end up making my own jacket disk cutter, and draw dies eventually... The weight I use, I end up cutting about half of the jacket off,.. seems to me a waste of copper... I figure if one uses a disk half the normal size (1") so it would end up about .50 - .55, I could draw the size I need, and then just trim to make even.. Not sure what the copper sheet would run,...

Still waiting for some IRS tax issues to clear up, but I am hooked on the idea of swaging my own bullets. I plan to start with 6.5 bullets, but would eventually like the ability to swage all my bullets if I so choose.

I can find suppliers for all sorts of rifle jackets, but what about pistol jackets at a "decent" price? Seems nobody is really in the pistol jacket game that I have been able to find so far. I am not really interested in swaging pistol jackets from old brass for whatever reason.

Help?

Larry Blackmon's pistol bullet jackets are much cheaper than Corbins. I paid about $70.00 for 1000 .44 jackest .70 inches long. I also e-mailed all the major bullet manufacturers a couple months ago about buying pistol jackets--no one was willing to sell any.

Now that they have called off global warming, that might not be a bad idea!:kidding:

I'm not sure if this is the right thread for this, but I'd be interested in getting some dies that could be used to convert sheet copper/brass into jackets, if the price on the dies wasn't too dear...

Ahhhhaa! Yes! You did tell me about those dies when we talked! I'd totally forgotten!

This means that to use those dies, I'd have to invest in a "S" series hand press, correct? And didn't you tell me, that you still had a press left that would handle those dies?

Perhaps we can do more business after all...

Swageall, I do think we'll be talking on the phone a lot sooner than I thought...

Jim

On the 30cal Jackets from Sierra it states "Sierra Match Jacket sold in two boxes of 500 pieces each"
That is 1000 jackets for 155.46 or 15.5¢ each.
