View Full Version : Smelting Thermometer = Propane Grill Thermometer?

I picked up a Propane Grill Thermometer at out recycling area (re: dump) and was
testing it out over the propane flame directly. Although it only goes up to 550 on
the dial, it continued to go past the 550 mark to what I would estimate is 700. Has
anyone used one of these thermometers when smelting lead?

No, lead melts at 650 and you are guessing at anything past your 550 mark. A company named Tru-Temp in NY makes thermometers for about $35 to your specs. They go to 1000 degrees. That is what you need to be correct. You can't guess in casting and be good at it.
