Let's talk about our workhorses. Doesn't have to be your well worn, ugly guns just the ones you consider a working handgun. Like most of us, I actually own several but I thought I would talk about a well worn S&W mdl 10. It was a re-import from New Zealand and was a working cops gun. I know it rode in a working cops holster because he had the same bad habit I have. He rested his hand on the butt of the gun, alot. The backstrap has very little finish and is mostly "patina". The rest of the gun shows heavy holster wear as well. While, this heavy barreled revolver had a good bit of finish wear when I received it from the importer, the action locked up tight as a safe. I even kept the Pachs it was wearing when it arrived.

It quickly endeared itself to me buy proving to be one of the most accurate handguns I own. A variety of loads performed amazing well with the exception of the lighter bullets which shoot so low I stick with the heavier 158 grain and above projectiles. Those weights also were the most accurate. Not too surprising considering S&W's intended use for the mdl 10. I have carried it on several camping/fishing/hunting trips worry free of damaging the finish. Some of the paces it has been have not helped the finish any at all. The canoe trip, even in a so called waterproof pouch, certainly didn't make it any prettier.

I have also used it in several IDPA matches and it currently stands guard in the dining/kitchen area. What, ya'll don't keep a handgun handy in each end of the house? Pictured with it is one of the loads that rides in it from time to time. Lyman 358477, 5.0 grains of Unique, WW cases and WW SPP. This mdl 10 has a "fast" barrel and will clock just under 900 FPS with that particular load. I have a box or two of that load ready all the time for this particular gun. Tell us about some of your workhorses and post a photo, everybody likes gun porn.

S&W Model 686 x 4". It was my back-country companion for many years, and after retirement from cop work it has slowly progressed toward being my just about all-occasion side iron. It just does so many things so well, it is tough to leave behind unless I'm headed to Lost Angeles or some other abandoned area of our nation. Such environs are SIG P-226 country.

Mine's a new model Ruger blackhawk in 45LC. It has a 5 1/2" barrel and wears Pachmayr grips.
I had the cylinder throats reamed out and installed a belt mountain base pin.
I sent the gun to Bob Munden and had him go through it, slicking up the action and getting all the creep out of the trigger.
I've only been hunting with it for a few years now.
So far I've taken 2 antelope, 2 hogs, a pile of cottontails, a bunch of blue grouse, a few jackrabbits, a bunch of prairie dogs, and a couple snakes with it.
It's the gun I belt on my waist when I head out into the badlands or up into the mountains.
It's under my pillow when I sleep in griz country, and on the seat beside me when I drive into places inhabited by bad people.
I trust my life to this sixgun, and it has never failed me.
Most of the time it is loaded with 250 grain keith SWC's loaded over 6.5 grains of Red Dot.
I feed it 320 grain hammer boolits over 18.5 grains of 2400 when I'm in the bear woods.

All see regular use. From front to back they go like this--

Hiking & General carry gun: 3" S&W 386, 7-shot .357 Mag with the Scandium frame and titanium cylinder. A wonderful hiking gun, I hardly know it's there. Until I pull the trigger, that is.

House & Briefcase gun: Rock Island Armory "A2" (14+1 widebody). It's the only 1911 I've ever owned --and there have been many-- that didn't send me into a flying rage over reliability issues.

Truck Gun: A well worn, 7.5" Ruger SBH. I once got a chain saw stuck in a tree while cutting firewood, and silly me, I didn't have my usual back up axe. But I did have the SBH... Did you know it takes exactly 36 full-power rounds from one of these to bring down a 12" spruce?

Hunting Gun: A Ruger Maximum cut down to 9" and rechambered to .445 SuperMag. Mmmmmm... SuperMag.

A Charter 44 Bulldog that has never let me down and a Star PD 45ACP. Both are "off brands", both have an iffy rep and both have been 100% reliable and accurate for me. Both are light, have alloy frames and are a bit on the homely side.

Another tried and true work gun is a Smiff 1917 with a Wondersight installed. Accurate and useful. I can;t forget my old standby M-19 either. Best double action cop gun ever made. BG's are in trouble out to 100+ yards with that one, or they were when I could see anyway. Getting old stinks!

3 of my favorites, one of these goes with me pretty much everywhere I go.

On top is a 28-2 357 Magnum. For a working/defense load I have a 158gr Jacket Hollow point loaded with a max load of H110. For general use in the woods I like 358429's over Unique or Reddot depending on what I am shooting at.

Of course the 45 acps made the picture. The Springfield 1911 is well broken in and feeds everything without a question. The Kahr CW45 is my nightstand and general carry gun. For a plinking and rabbit hunting load I use 452460's over Reddot and for a defense load 200gr Speer Golddots over Bluedot.

It's the gun in my avatar, a S&W 629-3 .44 Magnum. Being rural and venturing into cities only when I have to, it just makes the most sense I guess. It gets a steady diet of Elmer's favorite load, a 429241 Lyman atop of 20gr. of 2400. I wanted an M25 in .45 Colt, but none could be had when I looked around. This sweet little 4" 629-3 came around at a very good price so I adopted her, and glad I did! Elmer's load in this sweetheart doesn't recoil much more than a .45Colt and shoots better than I can hold her...Can't ask for more.:drinks:

My work horses number four:
CCW gun 329PD with 18g 2400 and 429244HP's weighing 223g.
629-4 Mtn Gun my "Target revolver" with a 25 ounce trigger and a Patridge front sight.
629-3 with 5" bbl Classic DX with a Hi-Viz fiber optic front sight, my deer hunting revolver.
Ruger KS45N 5-1/2' bbl with Patridge front sight--larger than deer gun that shoots 300g boolits well.
They are all .44 magnums and all wear Hogue rubber grips.

This one is a S&W M 29 Classic in the full 6 1/2" bbl length. Heavy, but it soaks up the recoil and is comfortable on the gun belt.

The little guy here is a the Convertible model Single Six from 1973. It's still active and accurate. That's five shots from 25 yds in a little over an inch.

Mine would have to be the old 4" S&W M28-2 I reworked to accept the 45 ACP cartridge. Lightweight and powerful enough for the reasons I carry a handgun.

I am trying to find a 4" 45 Colt to balance it but so far, no luck.

My old standby. A 5 inch Model 27. I purchased this particular ones around 2 years ago from a pawn shop where it was simply marked as "6 inch .357" for 400 bucks out the door. It's got plenty of holster wear from somewhere, and some speckles here and there. Somebody even did me a favor and boogered up the screws for me, but it locks up tight and shoots better than I do every day of the week.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b53/vanilla_gorilla911/wood017.jpg

My 6 inch 29 gets shot a lot more right now, mainly because I don't have a 358429 mould yet, but I hope to fix that here right shortly. A Keith bullet over 14.5 grains of 2400 is a pure joy to shoot, and will handle anything I'll need it to in these parts.

Boy, you can open a can of worms with that question! Just about everyone has a number of handguns, but which one is the workhorse? I have quite a few handguns but.........

I thought about it and my Smith and Wesson 65 stainless gets the nod. That revolver has been to some very far off places with me over the years while the rest lay peacefully in the safe. It's a simple gun and fits my hand.....heavy barrel, fixed sights, factory grips, etc. but it packs/pulls out easily and alway goes bang in the direction I choose. Still looks very good after all these years too (bought it back in 1971). It's just that "one gun" I automatically grab.

VG,

I suspect you'll be disappointed with the 358429/Model 27 combo. Unless you're using .38 Spcl brass or "deep seating" that bullet it's going to be too long for the short cylinder on that Model 27 of yours.

vanilla_gorilla

Yeah, I know about the bullet length. I can trim cases slightly or, (more likely) just seat them deep in the .357 cases. I use both Magnum and Special cases, so I'm not mated to only Magnum-length cases like some are.

Ruger SBH 44mag 4/58". I do a lot of blackpowder hunting and fishing, so it goes everywhere with me in AK. I have a fancy simply rugged holster on a chest rig for fishing (works great under my chest waders), but I just keep going back to the cheap old uncle mikes in a cross draw config for hunting and stomping around the woods- I barely even notice it.

I'm new here, this is my first post, but I would like to comment on my own "well-worn warriors".

The first is a 1946 made 6.5" S&W K-22 Masterpiece I picked up at a yard sale in the early '80s. It has taken more rabbits and squirrels than I can count ever since. Not bad for a well used handgun that is 13 years older than I am.

The second would be my trusty old Ruger New Model Super Blackhawk 10 1/2" stainless .44 Mag that my wife gave me as a wedding present. Many deer have hit my dinner table because of that revolver.

The last, but certainly not least, of my old workhorse handguns is an old stainless AMT Hardballer standard slide 1911 copy I acquired in trade, again in the early 80's. I have put 1000's and 1000's of rounds down range with that pistol and over the years have only had one failure with it: I broke the extractor while qualifiying for my Texas CCW permit the first year they were available. 10 minutes and a new Colt extractor later I finished qualifying and it has never failed again since. I still carry that pistol to this day.

I hope ya'll won't mind this being my first post here. I'm new to this board, but not to shooting or firearms and am an NRA Endowment Member.

Trimming the Mag cases to fit would be the best bet. You won’t have to trim much off and if that’s the only 44 you have then you won’t have to worry about getting the cases mixed up.

Back to the topic, I plumb forgot to mention my little 642 which I carry most of the time. It’s resting in my pocket as I type this. I have used it to dispatch a few snakes and other vermin. I hope that I never have to use for the reason that I carry it.

.357 Taurus Tracker
.45 ACP H&K USP

The Tracker is, in my opinion, one of the best values out there for revolvers. It is comfortable in my hand and has worked well for me with a large variety of loads. It accurately shoots where I aim and comes from the factory with a grip that is comfortable enough to shoot all day and in any weather. The barrel is ported and it has adjustable sights. My revolver has seen very few jacketed bullets and I am sure it will be around much longer than I am.

The USP is is like a part of me. It has never failed me after thousands of rounds and is as accurate as many of the "match" grade 1911's I have shot over the years. It is just ever so slightly too big for my hand but I have used it so much that I am completely accustomed to it. If I could only have one gun, it'd be my USP. I will say that I have not shot nearly as much lead through the USP as I have jacketed bullets.

I have other pistols I thoroughly enjoy and shoot often but one of these two is always the first one I reach for regardless of what I am doing.

My "What is the dog growling at in the middle of the night" gun is a model 15 Combat Masterpiece with a set of Pachmeyer grippers. Best natural-pointing handgun that I own. Hold it in two-handed isoceles grip and roll that silky double action for a double-tap and I can watch the holes appear in the 7 yard target like magic - right where I'm looking. That's a comforting thing to know when it's dark.

I don't have the experience you guys do, but my house gun is a stock Glock 17. I shoot the .44 Mountain Gun for fun, but the one I would be most comfortable with defending my home is the Glock. Easy for my wife to shoot as well. (I have a Jarvis barrel for it so I can shoot cast out of it for practice, but keep it loaded with 124 grain Golden Sabers for defense.) It fits my hand like it was made for it.

It doesn't matter what your handgun choice is, what matters is the feeling Uncle R. described in his post. That confidence you have once the gun is in your hand as you go to deal with the situation. The handgun chosen to deal with such situations is a very personal and individual decision. The vast majority of us on this board will have a few that we feel this way about, but there is always that one special gun. If I remember my Hemingway........."The comfort of the worn, checked grips in my hand " probably not exact, but ya'll know the sensation.

A Security-Six with a 4 in. barrel, wish it looked as good as Kragshooter's. Mine ain't got no finish left but is in very good mechanical condition. I've had it a long time and know it works and where it hits. I've went out the door with it and a Mag-Lite more than once.

A 357 revolver with a 4 in. barrel is a very versitle handgun.

In the autumn of 1989, I took my Old Model 7.5" Super Blackhawk on a combined woodland-caribou/moose hunt in the Northwest Territories. On arriving home, I told my wife that the ol' hogleg had seemed a bit cumbersome (after twenty-odd years of carrying it in the bush!).

That Christmas, she and my daughter gave me an example of the first of the "Mountain" series from Smith and Wesson, the .44 Magnum 629-2 "Mountain Revolver". Since that happy Day, I've carried this revolver in the field and in town, from north of the Arctic Circle to southern Nevada, with loads from E. Keith maximums to powder-puff specials, concealed and openly.

Any job that I need a handgun to do, it has done. There are surely better guns for specific tasks, and I own a bunch of them, but this gun has done it all for me in fine fashion.

It alone fills the bill for my "workhorse gun".

Well, the workhorse would have to be the 5 1/2" BH 45, carried and shot (several) SBH 44s for close hunting. The Mdl. 10 snubbie probably gets carried more and shot less than anything else.

Were you able to take a handgun to Canada to hunt ?

BruceB

"Were you able to take a handgun to Canada to hunt ?"

No, I lived in Canada for over fifty years before emigrating to the the USA (where I was born).

Most of that time was in the Northwest Territories, and I actually had a permit from the RCMP for many years which allowed me to carry handguns in the wilds for bear protection. When they decided "We don't issue those any more," I decided to continue the practice anyway, just keeping the gun out of sight.

There is NO handgun hunting in Canada, period. There is no concealed carry even for citizens, except under MOST UNUSUAL conditions. The only way a US citizen can transport a handgun into Canada is for use in competition, with proper documentation. It must be transported trigger-locked inside a locked box, separate from the ammo.

Most gun-owning rural Canadians simply ignore the stupid firearm laws, but they do it in the full knowledge of the risks faced if they're caught at it.

The gun laws were one of the major reasons for our leaving Canada.

I never believed in sendin' a boy to th' mill so my workhorses are (1) Ruger 4-5/8" Old Model Single Action with #454424 260 gr. Keith ahead of 8.5 gr Unique. (2) Smith & Wesson M-24-3 3" .44 Special with either RCBS 44-250K or #429421 Keith ahead of 6.8 gr. Unique Both guns are very accurate with the stated loads. I've never owned but one .38 Special pistol and was smart enough to rid myself of it years ago. The above stated loads do what Elmer said they would - cut full caliber holes in target or game and that's good enough for me.

I have a 6" half-lug GP100 that shoots great but is a pain to carry. All I have now is one of those nylon belts with a generic Uncle Mike's holster. How do you carry yours? This is my only real complaint with this revolver other than because of the weight you wouldn't call it a quick handler, if you know what I mean.

I'm also thinking of changing the grips. The thumb rest is totally wrong for my hand. Any suggestions? I'm wondering about a plain old Pachmayr Presentation grip.

In town I typically carry either the 3" Charter Bulldog, or maybe the 2" Detective Special. When I head for the hinterlands I like the 4" 25-5, or the one I'm just getting acquainted with, the 4" 28-2 that's now a .44 Special.

My bedside handgun is the 1076 with Tritium inserts, backed up by the 20" 870 with 00 Buck.

It's hard to leave out the LW Commander or the P-14, but they're just not the "Workhorse" choices.

Post-war "transitional" S&W .38/44 Outdoorsman had 6 1/2" barrels. This one was cut back in the late 1940s and had its cylinder reamed to accommodate .357Magnum rounds. Factory .357Magnum revolvers were almost impossible to buy right after the war ! Although the gun handles them with ease I only use .38Specials loaded to .38/44 levels.

This particular gun is the perfect "workhorse" for trips to the desert and mountains of eastern California & Nevada ! :) :)

A Ruger BH 357 W/ a 9" P.O. Acley bbl. OOH YEAH.
Luckly the S&W & BH did not leave the family so I get to see them once in a while.

Now for one still W/ me, & I'll never part W/.

A S&W k-22 eats about 1,000 rounds a year 4" easy to carry & does the job NO RIFLE NEED TO APPLY.
A Ruger RH 357 SS in 5&1/2" it likes hot food , am currently trying to get 12 shot groups under 2". at 50yds. Want 1".
A Ruger Rh 7&1/2' 44 it likes hot loads as well, next project to achieve 1" for 12 shot groups.

Different guns have served as workhorses at different times in my life. Quite a few years back, I had a Star M45 Firestar. It was my only centerfire handgun and as such, it was truly called upon to do everything, which it did fairly well, until the frame cracked. Later, I bought a Dan Wesson M15 357 with four barrels and the 4-inch tube was my weekly range companion for a number of years, launching untold numbers of lead SWC bullets. These days, I find I am shooting a couple of 3-inch 1911s in 45ACP constantly, informally and in competition, as well as packing them on a daily basis. A Kimber and a Colt. They constantly amaze me at what they will do. 5k+ rounds in 5-6mos. I think they qualify as workhorses!

This is the thread that made me decide to register here. I have three humble handguns to submit. The top one is my battered old Ruger MKII ,it has killed a pile of things for me ,from rats to rattlesnakes to 200 lb hogs. Extremely reliable ,extremely accurate.
The next is my Ruger Sp101, I use it as my ccw gun and it grants me a strong sense of security knowing I have scalable power in a small package.
The third gun is a bit of a wannabe,I would like it to be one I carried and fired more often. This Ruger GP 100 is what I consider the epitome of a "work horse revolver",sturdy, reliable, and gives good service against most creatures in the lower 48.

Favorite? They are all my favorite! :)

In the bush, a 8 3/8 S&W 25-5.

In the city, a .40 USP compact.

In close, a .380 PPKs.

Wayne, mine also has a tyler. Installed by the police officer I bought it from, it's gonna stay there.

Here is my S&W model 28-2 that I carry in the timber. Sorry for the condom bullets. I usually shoot cast.

Got another...this is a Lipsey's Ruger .44 Special...yeah it's new but I'm even carrying it while cutting the grass...wife call's it "The Mistress"....I've never named a gun before..but this one may get that tag. This's it with home made coco bolo grips and with my rig in standard factory cheese graters.

for years it was my glock 21 2nd gen frame. Has a LW barrel to shoot cast. I still use it as a training gun, but my new workhorse, a Glock 20 in 10mm replaced it for daily carry.

The G-21 has taken deer, put down cows and horses, potted woodchucks, squirrels, partriges, ect...

i recently picked up a ruger SS security six, has workhorse written all over it!

Ain't that the truth! My 4" is what's locked in the Jeep all the time, loaded with 158 gr Speer Gold Dots. Might make a switch to 358429s and H-110 when the group buy molds come in, we'll see. . . I don't have a good carry holster for it, though -- something else I should rectify.

Anytime I'm in the woods my S&W 629 MG is with me. I DO have a good holster for it! Usually loaded with Winchester 210 gr Silvertips. I'm tempted to come up with a 1000+fps load with 250 gr full wadcutters (probably using Universal Clays), but then there's the old handloads for defense debate. . .

8 grains of Universal seems to shoot like a dandy in my 6 inch 29. Right around a thousand fps. 7 grains of Bullseye makes for a similar load, but it's more consistent.

Sweet coco bolo grips Rodfac. Where did you get the holster? That is neat!

EMC45...Son #2 made the belt, Son #1 made the knife, and I made the holster and grips. We've got a cpl of horses and have done all of our own tack repair over the years. There's not much to making a good Tom Threepersons rig, but the loops in the belt are a PITA according to Son #2. He's done a dozen of them for family and friends tho. Thanks for the compliment. They're a little on the gaudy side but grow on you.
