I have an older (late 30's) vintage winchester 30-30 in excellent condition.
I am toying with the idea of using 180 boolits.....
has anyone tried that wt. of boolit and if so what powders / charge
I tend to use 2400, Unique, 3031, and 748
I would use this as a hunting round
thanks

I have had great success with Reloder#7. I use 21 gr for a practice load and 25.5 gr for a pig hunting boolit. This boolit is a custom mold and it is not mine. It was loaned to me and I cast 500 or so witch has lasted a while. But I can't get anymore so I am playing with a Lyman 311041 that weighs about 176 gr with my alloy. I use the same powder but with 22 gr for practice and 26.5 for a hunting load.

My 311041 casts 178gr boolits with my alloy and I load 27.0gr. IMR4895 for my Handi Rifle in 30-30.

I have had success with the RCBS 180fn and 30 grains of W748.

My 30-180-FN drops bullets that weigh right at 190 grains and it shoots well with them but is alittle more weight than I need for plinking so I use a 30-150-FNHP for most of my casual shooting./beagle

I've used Lyman mold 311291 for many years. Its a round nose version of #311041 which has a meplat/flat. They both weigh around 170 grains with WW and maybe a bit more or around 175 grains, so another 5 grains won't change much. With a starting load of 25 grains of IMR 3031 you can safely go up to 30-31 grains and approach factory velocity at 2000-2230 fps....all accoreding to the Lyman handbook of cast bullets. For me I got good groups out of a 94 rifle and 94SRC using 26.5 grains so I didn't persist with any of the higher charges, although they might be more appropriate for hunding purposes. Good shooting. I took the gascheck step off of a 311-291 mold, it now drops a 180 gr plainbased bullet. I load that bullet with 18 grs of 5744. I have not put it on paper at distance, but it's no problem keeping the 12x16 inch gong ringing at 270 yds.

Soft-point cast that boolit, and I'd pronounce it "venison-capable" sight unseen.

Either the 303 Savage or the 30-30 WCF with 190 grain cast boolits just says "deer hunting" like few other combinations.

.

I cast it from wheelweight so its plenty ready to go for meat gathering, but right now I'm more into the 550 gr paper patches in the Sharps for that sort of thing.:drinks::-D
