used to doing 2.2g on 158g, want something miserly such as this on the light side. I've done 3.6g (1000fps) so far but want a light plinking load in 800fps range. Something my 70 year old mom will find mild.

Try 3.0 gr. of Clays, with the Lee .38-105 gr. SWC. in .38 Special cases. This load is verey accurate in my S&W 686. hardly any kick to it as well.

I used to load 2.5 grs of Bullseye under a 125 gr boolit for steel plate shooting.
I never bothered to check the velocity but you could sometimes see them in flight if the light and background were right. Recoil and muzzle blast were about nothing.
I did notice that the light boolits needed a heavy crimp to get good ignition.
They were good for a couple inch group at 25 yards from a revolver but would go into one ragged hole from a 10" Contender.

Would prefer to stay with red dot. Anyone have any loads for this?

I have been loading red dot loads for my wifes ruger gp 100 with 2.3 grains underneath a 148 grain cast wadcutter (rcbs) and it has almost no recoil . Not to mention that they are almost slow enough to outrun (LOL)! That must be a sighn of true love and trust (buying your wife a handgun and teaching her to shoot it accurately)

Fluffy old RedDot is a good choice for this. You could probably load it down to one grain and still get the bullet out of the barrel. Just work slowly down until you stick one and then come up a couple tenths of a grain. I'd think you could work down to 500 fps with complete safety, if you have a chrono.

Shooting target/bulseye with the 38 usually involves light loadings anyway so a lot of choices are around. Light charges of the faster burning powders are used. I use with a 148 grain WC, 2.5 grains of 700X, 2.7 grains of Bullseye or Red Dot. it produces an accurate load with minimal recoil that burns clean and is consistent at 25 yards or more depending on the wind. With even lighter bullets like those in the 115-120 grain range...such as the Lyman 358242RN, the RCBS 115 truncated cone, and others of similar shape produced by Lee or Saeco; the same general loadings by weight will again give you muzzle velocity between 700-800 fps, good accuracy and light recoil.....not really/significantly more than a 22RF. Noise level is also low. Practice will make anyone do a decent job of improving scores. LLS

This is kinda what I'm thinking. I just hope someone has a load they've used around this range.
