Does anyone know of an after-market grip available for the Colt Police Positive? The original grips are ugly and nasty on recoil. Any suggestions?

Thanks guys.

I adapted a set of Pachmayr Presentation neoprene grips to a 1920-made Colt Police Positive earlier this year. This required some light sanding of the rubber and metal skeleton where it meets the rear section of the trigger guard. You're right--those hard rubber dinky stocks aren't real usable.

On a 1933 Detective Special, I added a Tyler T-Grip. I would rate the adapted Pachs as a better hand fit for me, but the T-Grip makes the DS usable.

I would appreciate help to identify a pair of Colt grips that I picked up at an estate sate.

I will hazard a guess here.....based on the radiused butt ends and overall length, I would bet a little folding money on post-WWII but pre-1972 D-frame, Police Positive/Special or Detective Special.

Bingo... no bet..cuz you are right. They will fit a Cobra of that vintage as well.

Thanks.....that sounds like it could be correct as I got them at an estate sale that had lots of WWII items. Would you know the value of grips like this? And does the number on the inside mean anything as far as the type of grips or pistol it went to?

The hand-written number may or may not relate to the firearm or its serial number from which the grips were originally removed. I have seen older S&W revolvers with original grips stamped inside with the frame's serial number. I can't recall seeing any Colts of this vintage with similar markings, but recollection isn't foolproof. I have a 1949 Colt Officer's Model Special (larger "I" frame), and its original grips are unmarked--as are the original grips on a 1920 Police Positive and 1904 New Pocket (both "D" frames) in my safe. In James Serven's book on Colts from 1836-1954, the question of grip panel markings isn't addressed one way or the other.

I was going to suggest Eagle Grips also. But LUCKYDAWG13 beat me to it.

I had them make me a set of new grips for my old Colt .22 New Frontier. They fit very good and the work on them is great.

The above Colt wood stocks are post-war for any Colt D-frame such as Cobra, Detective special and Police positive special up to about 1965. After that the stocks were modified to fit the shorter grip frame of the 1966 and later D frame.
