followed me home today. I dont know much about Smiths, but will get with the powers to be around me and let them look it over. A little rough on looks, but mechanically sound with a awesome trigger. Typical blue wear on the barrel end and some light rust on one side like it was sitting in someones barn. I am going to give it a good cleanup and oil, then get a good pair of rubber grips. Should be a shooter. Where can I find the year made on this?

Well, if its stamped "14" that was started in 1957 when Smith started numbering most guns with a model # I believe. If ya tell us a serial number or 14 dash 1,2,3 etc someone with a Smith book can give ya an idea

The Smith book I have says the 14-3 came out in '67. In 1968 they started the serial number with a D prefix. If you post the first 4 characters we can probaly get you a year of manufacture.

k848782 - k946391 = 1969 :-D

The 14-3 series run was from 1967 thru 1977. The D series s/n began in '68 as mentioned.

..............I was never much into pistols. I had a Ruger BH 357 4-5/8" I carried when we went riding, another Ruger BH in 30 M1 carb my grandfather gave me and a Ruger MkII 678 auto. Compared to the rifles they were a mere blip on my radar. However several years back I had a chance to buy a M14-4 S&W K38. Had I had access to a revolver like this one earlier on, I would have paid much more attention to them :-) I think I could shoot it blindfolded and do well with it!

Maybe one of you guys could give me a date on mine? It's a 6" but has a different looking serial number then those shown here. On the frame beneath the crane it has M14-4, then below that it has 34 K 95XX, and below that 480XX.

34K95XX - cannot be pinpointed to the exact year (at a glance) but its either 1978 or 1979.

The dash 14 series stemmed from 1977 thru 1982 when the Model 14 was discontinued.

25K0001 - 56K9999 = 1978/79

In 1991 they again started production with the dash 5 series.

I shot mine today, sweet! I like it. New grips are a must though.

Good old Uncle Dean (Grennell) was a big fan of the K-38 and praised them in his writing. I was a big fan of Dean Grennell - don't know why so many years went by before I got my first K-frame. It was a Model 15 Combat Masterpiece P.D. trade-in. Lots of holster wear but tight and slick. I bought it on a whim because it was cheap. That was (still IS!) one sweet revolver and started my love affair with Smiths and especially K frames. My model 14 was bought used from an old-fashioned small town gun shop and it's everything that Uncle Dean led me to expect. Very accurate, very smooth - not too big, not too small - just right. I guess that S&W had their problems over the years and especially under certain ownership - but a good S&W is a mighty fine revolver!

Well done, I have a nice Model 14, converted to SA for target work, currently off getting a pair of custom grips made. It is as accurate as all get out. I shot a personal best in a Bullseye match the other week with it and am very happy with it.

I have an old Model 64 military and police which is the same, tight as all get out with holster wear. I am going to wring it out this afternoon. Serial No D426614, when would it have been made? I am keen to use this revolver in Police and Services matches (I am a retired Correctional Officer) as it is a close realitive of the Model 10 which was my duty gun for 22+years.

I better stop now before I get accused of hijacking the thread, but old Smiths get me excited, they are fine revolvers and are invariably accurate and well made. My first centrefire was a 586. still have it. Now all I need is a 32, a 22 and a couple of big bore N frames to round off the collection :(

Great guns, you will be very happy with it.
Four Fingers.
