View Full Version : Ideal mold #245499 in 243 Winchester

This Ideal mold #245499 just followed me home. Sure is a nice looking bullet. This is where my problem starts. With a gas check and all lubed up it weighs 110 grains. In all the books I have I see no listing for a cast 110 grain bullet. This is an older bullet and I checked a lot of older books and found nothing. I also can't see what this bullet was made for, if not for a 243. I sure hope someone here has been down this road before and can help me.

Lyman 45 has the 100 gr 245498 with an accuracy load of 10 gr Red Dot, 1699 fps and 33,000 CUP. The 10 gr load is a max load and the starting load is 8.0 grains. the 497 95 gr starts at 8.5 gr and goes to 11.5, 1934 fps and 39,400 CUP. The 85 gr 496 starts @ 10 gr Red dot and goes to 12 gr @ 2002 fps and 40,300 CUP. All powders Red Dot. That should give you an idea of a starting load for 110 gr. I would go with somewhere around 7 and watch accuracy. The "word" on boolits greater than 85 grans in the 243 is they won't stabilize but the RCBS 95 works great in mine.

I read that the larger bullets would not stabilize so my question is still the same, what did ideal make this bullet mold, 245499 for? I also looked at the load data for the lighter bullets and will start low unless someone has worked with this bullet and can give me some guidance.

the old 244 rem had a different twist rate a slower one. and cast could be pushed a bit faster in it even though lighter jacketed was the norm for stabilization.
kinda like 10 twist is pretty fast for cast in a 30 cal but slow in a 22.
just back dow a 100 gr load a tad to start look at the pressures in the books they rarely exceed 42k
i would use a much slower powder than red dot.
along the lines of 23 grs of 4895,or 15 grs of 2400 to start.

My understanding was that the 245499 was made for the 6mm Lee Navy cartridge, but that may not be correct. I have been unable to find it listed any where, although I have seen several of the molds available. Billy

I would appreciate info on where I could find that 245499 mold. I have an original Lee Navy and I am playing with the idea of developing cases and a load for it. The original bullet is listed as 112gr so that 110gr mold sounds like it was intended for the Lee Navy.
