milltownhunter;
My first choice for a long barrelled revolver (made for both scoped and unscoped handguns) is the Bianchi Hush System Ranger cross chest design:

I have carried my Model 29 S&W 8 3/8" and my Ruger Red Hawk 7½" for many a mile with complete comfort with my Bianchi Hush System holster. I would recommend the full flap (optional extra) for protection in brush country. They are made of padded nylon. Do NOT discount these because they are not made of leather. They are as good as it gets for long barrels.

I have the Uncle Mike's Sidekick shoulder holster for my scoped 8 3/8" 686, I had to go with the model designed for a scoped 10" Contender (size 4).

It isn't the prettiest thing, but it is functional and fit is good.
