Just like to get a consensus of opinions before I jump into the powder purchase arena.

So far I have found Unique, Red Dot, H4198, and AA5744 to be pretty cast friendly.

What else have you folks tried and found to be forgiving on cast in numerous applications? What I mean is that the powder work well in a variety of loads and cartridges, not just one specific charge.

List your secrets, boys.

I've burnt more WC820, H110, 231 and Titegroup launching cast boolits than anything else.

Good point, the only truly cast unfriendly powders I have run across are those that operate only at the high end of pressure range and prefer not to be reduced. IMR 7383 and 4350 jump to mind.

You might also narrow it down to cartridge type; handgun, large bore strait walled cartridges or bottlenecked cartridges.

To add to the long list.

V V N110 or N120 are most excellent cast boolit powders. :-D

Trail Boss
It's designed for cast. It's mainly for light loads. Very bulky, clean burning.

Promo for light loads
Bullseye for light to medium
Herco and WSF for "extra medium"
AA#7 and 2400 for the hot stuff.

Powders I don't like: Titegroup, Blue Dot.
Powders I haven't tried yet but looks good on paper: Power Pistol.

IMR 3031

in most rifle loads. 30-30, 35 Rem run to max loads that the "J" words stuff does.

I probably use more SR 4759 in rifles than anything; though I don't see much of an advantage over 2400 or 4198 other than a few grains difference in application. Just because I bought a few jugs of it surplus awhile back.

Like the others said, however: I would never be without 2400, Unique, and Red Dot as they will pretty well do it all with cast. That said, next down the list would be 4759 and 5744. Am becoming quite fond of Trail Boss as well for lite and plinking and small game type loads, and may have to add that to my number one list in sequence after shooting a few more pounds of the stuff. That said, after a mishap, I now weigh all finished cast loads that do not have at least half of the case full of powder, and most of the above on my priority list do not. This is in addition to the flashlight routine.:coffeecom

Did anyone mention 2400,4198,and 3031? [smilie=1:[smilie=1:
depends on what ya want to do, most powders will work.

Go to the powder companies web sites/load data. As stated before I recomend staying away from powders that warn against reduced loads.

UNIQUE is the one if you are not trying to break a speed record.

1. For loads under about 1.3 K fps Unique is the ticket.

2. For loads in the 1.4 to 1.8 K fps area, 2400, 4227 and 4759 are top choices. They have about the same burning rate, but different characeristics.

3. For loads 1.8 K fps and higher medium burning powders like 3031, 4759 and the like are what you want.

Just one powder? I buy 2400 by the 8 lbs keg if they tells you anything. I also buy Unique by the 8 lb keg, that it is mostly used in handgun cartridges.

Hello.
In France we don't have all the choice of powders you have but we have Frencs ones and Vihtavuori. I use to load pistol loads (9mm & 45 ACP) with Vectan As & A1.
Revolvers loads (357 & 44 Mag) with Vectan A0 & VV N110 (nearly the same as 2400). Rifle loads with N110, N120 and N130.

In .45-70 I use SR-4579, IMR-3031, Re7.

In .45 Colt I use Unique.

Probably the most universal would be Goex Cartridge :Fire:
