Can I use 45 colt dies to load full power 454 casull ammo? I have been told I need to use 45 jacketed mag bullets. What about cast?

You should be able to use 45lc dies to load 454 casull. It depends on the chamber dimensions, 454 casull chambers in some (FA) guns are cut to a min dimension. I bought a set of carbide RCBS dies for the 454 that I also use for the 45lc HOWEVER in my dillon I use the 45 lc dies to load my 454. As far as the boolits are concerned some of the lighter 45 bullets would shed their jackets inside the bore. As far as cast boolits arre concerned H#LL YES this cartridge just begs a heavy cast boolit!

I second that.

Must have been some gun shop guy that told you to use jacketed bullets. 3 of my .454's have never fired anything but cast boolits.

I have a set of Redding dies that says 45LC and 454 Casull. They have a steel washer that you use with the die when you are loading 454 Casull. The washer is the exact thickness to go from 45LC to Casull loading. This washer is available from Redding. I also have a set of dies that are set up the same way for 38 Special and 357 Magnum.

I once loaded the Casull and LC for a friend successfully with just my 45ACP dies; no problems of any sort. It was just a matter of die adjustment....at least once upon a time....now unless they have changed something it still ought to work. LLS

Thanks guys for the information. I thought I could use the 45 colt dies for the 454. I just have to make sure that I have tight bullet pull and a strong crimp on the 454s. Thanks again.

It's a good idea to measure the expander ball to insure a tight grip on your boolits. If you are sizing .452", you want a .448" expander ball.
