I bought a Winchester model 94ae 30-30 at a auction a few weeks ago. I was thinking of rebarreling it in a 38-55 . I was thinking abought this barrel.

I was wondering if any of the enternal parts had to be changed for this to work?
Have any of you had experence with this barrell?

drum,

My gunsmith friend and I swapped out the barrel on my post-64 94, from .30-30 to .38-55. Swapped barrel only, nothing done or changed and she feeds & fires great.

A local gunsmith mentioned doing one like that for a guy. I think Numrich carries the same barrel and he got his from them.

We didn't talk about it at length, but he did say the most difficult part of the project was changing the inside profile of the forearm from round to octagon.

Springfield Just did one. He went from the round to Octogon barrel. You can have it rebored for about the cost of the barrel.

Thanks for the answers . I never done anything like this and wanted to make sure I was not getting in over my head. but if it is pretty straight forward I think I will give it a go. I already have a couple of 30-30 older guns . I got a good deal on this Winchester. I would consider having it rebored but it has a 20" barrel (I Think havn't mesurred) .I kinda like to have a longer barrel.

I sent my rifle from S GA on a tuesday and got it back from jes reboring in OR on the following monday. He gets it back fast. Mine was only a 20" barrel, but I think I'm really going to enjoy it. I just sent a msg to rancddog about buying his 235gr mold.

drumgool,

I built a 35/30-30 on a Marlin (actually Glenfield) and used Jesse for the rebore work. He is good and I had it back in just under 2 weeks.

I had thought about doing a Winney for the conversion, but couldn't find a OEM barrel that had enough meat for my taste.

I like the octogaon barrels looks too. I think you'll have a nice rifle. I have a 375 Winney and I love it. Can't beat a good lever!!!!!

That sounds like just a barrel swap with the only modification being to fit the forend to the 1/2 octogon new barrel. Everything else should do fine. If your M94AE is a 20" barrel then I'd opt for the longer new 26" barrel. If your M94AE is the 24" barrel then I'd consider the rebore.

Good morning
Last time up here NORTH I was at a show and there was a 375 Win barrel on a table for $50. I snapped that up as I wanted one. Next over in the far corner was a rusty Post 64 30-30 for $200. Alittle machine work on the larger diameter threaded 375 barrel and it was attached. Shoots very nice with HEAVY cast with the faster twist. I do not plan on Hotrodding it and will keep the 30-30 barrel with it for the future.

I rebarreled a late model 94AE with cross bolt safety to a barrel from Buffalo arms, 26" 38-55 AE half/half. Did a little extra such as button mag and forend cap. The barrel screwed in and headspaced perfectly, no machining required. Rifle shoots wonderfully with Lyman #375296 GC and sized .378/.379 over Reloader 7 for chronoed 1800FPS on a warm day Used original front sight and Lyman tang sight. Fine rifle and a fine shooter after about 200 rounds of Hornady 220 gr. J-word to polish the bore and then remove all J-word fouling. MMMMMMMMMMMMMGOOD!!!!!!!!

I did that with a Marlin 336. Someone had found a reciever that had been neglected. I got the parts I wanted, and sent it to Marlin.
I got back, this 30-30 Ballard rifled 28" 336, with full under tube magazine. Felt great, fired well, and was just plain comfortable.
I got the barrel from Numerich Arms. They had a bunch of older 30-30 barrels in all kinds of lengths. They had a tube that folks used to make the longer magazines with spring.
It looked great also. I just wish it had been octagonal.

I think if you search I did a lengthy post when i did my conversion. Mine is now a 26" octagon barrel in 38-55. I went into where to get the parts and how to do it.
