Howdy Gents,

Just wanted to see if any of you have ever used this powder for non-magnum/short action calibers?

Here's my dilemma, I inherited two pounds of H4831 and have no use for it.
I'm not going to give it away, as I am sure that I will have a use for it one day.
I own a .300 Win. Mag. and two .30-06 rifles and I am loaded up, ammowise.

Currently I am trying to finish up some .308 Win. and 7.62X39...has anyone ever "experimented" with H4831 to determine what other calibers it might be good for?

Your input is greatly valued.

Kind Regards,

Giovanni

It will work in the 308W with full case full, but not in the Russie because the lack of volume to get enough for any umph. ... felix

Works great in many cartridges and especially useful in the necked down 06 cases(25,26,27,28). Jack O'Connor would tell you it is the ONLY powder for the 270 Win.

Also works well in the .257 Roberts and 7mm mag.

Unless you are worried about it deteriorating ....... I would save it for your .300 Win

I use it in 30-06, 25-06, 257 Wby., 300 Win. mag., 243 Win.,270, 7mm mag. I bought 25 # a year or so ago. A very good powder, especially for heavier bullets in the above calibers.

H-4831 works great in my Marlin .30-30 with 34g and Lyman's 311291. Vel 1793fps.

Has anyone ever used it in loads for their M1A? I've heard that the powder doesn't burn hot enough to fully extend the bolt back and sometimes does not rack the folllowing round. Anyone have any knowledge with autoloaders in general and IMR 4831? Say 308, 300 Win Mag,30.06, 270 and 338 Mag?

Somehow I feel that your "surplus H4831" is not really surplus other than to your current perceived needs, it can always be used in the future even if not the first powder choice. Now, I have used some REAL surplus H4831 without any troubles.

When my father's shooting and reloading desires dwindled around 1990 (as mine increased) I took over the gun collection and reloading gear. At the time, we were still using Lyman 310 tong tools and every charge was weighed on an old and very slow to stablize (it needed more or thicker grease) Herters scale. The cans of powder were kept in GI ammo cans (where they could explode if the were in a fire though it did keep them fresh) with the exception of an old Western Auto turpintine can I found in the attic in the 80's with a taped on label marked 4831. I asked my father what the deal was with it and he said a guy from the sportsmans club gave him the can which had come from a barrel of GI surplus powder in the 50's sometime before he had any reloading gear. He had mixed it in with his ancient photo developing chemicals that had been long forgotten in the attic.

I probably should have poured it out and forgotten about the "Turpintine powder" but since I am pretty darring (read stupid) I decided it would be a good idea to try it out in my new to me at the time pre '64 M94 Winch with some 150 grain short jackets and the remaining old Lake City primers (wooden trays and all) that were in stock. My father said it was already too slow for a 30/30 and he figured it wouldn't have gotten more potent with age so I could try a published starting load and probably not blow myself up. It worked fine, with only a few unburned sticks remaining in the fired cases. I didn't want to try it's high pressure stability due to it's age and terrible storage conditions so I never went over my original starting load and I ended up using up what must have been over a pound in a fairly short period of time even with the well worn $5.00 Lee Loader I was using.

I have since replaced the "Turpintine powder" with fairly large stocks of pulldown 4895 and WC-820 as well as other surplus powder that was given a new name or number due to the fact it wasn't ever a commercial powder with decent results though it requires a lot of experimenting (read caution) to make proper use of it.

If a poor rifleman were to find himself burdened with a barrel of 4831 I am sure he could make use of it in most any caliber if he had to so don't worry about it.

I have bough and burned a BUNCH of h4831 surplus in past years. When I started reloading it was seventy five cents a lb. Best powder I ever found in my 25-06

Surplus (Grandad's) H4831 is the most accurate powder for his 22-250. I inherited both. Use a compressed load of 43 grains. Get about 3600 fps with a 52 grain bullet.
