I just came across an unopened old 3 pound can of bullseye. It's in a red hercules can with letters ICC-13 on the bottom. The lot number is not legible. I am seeking to learn the approximate date this powder was manufactured. I did come across an ole post started by smokemjoe with a 3# yellow can but no answer as to approximate manufacture date. anyone know?

If it has been stored in a reasonable temperature, it will be just fine up to about 100 yrs.

Thanks for the reply Bill. I have no doubt the powder is just as good today, as it was when it was manufactured - I'm just curious as to when Bullseye began use of and/or stopped the use of this type of container.

They were using the cardboard containers with the pull up spouts in the 80s. The cardboard containers with a plug type stop for more than a few years before that. Tin cans go back to the 60s...

I've still got one of those square, squatty cans of BE with the seal still on it. I guess I'll get around to using one of the days after all those cardboard cans with the pull up spouts and all used up...

The pull up spouts were still better than the flat can with a plug on top, just used one up with Blue Dot in it last night. It had one load for AA on the can everthing else was paper. I'm 39 yrs old and most of my powder almost 300#'s I collected in the last 20 years is older than me. But the good news since I'm layed off I get a chance to burn alot more of it and am loving it.

Finished up a round cardboard pull spout Hercules Bullseye container last year. It was in a box of odd and ends reloading stuff. About 4.5 oz. in it. It worked fine. Have some Herco in the same type of container.

Just loaded up some 9mm JHP's using HS-5 in the squarish metal can with the metal stopper I bought in the 70"s! No vinegar smell, so I expect it to go BOOM!!

I have one of those round yellow metal BullsEye cans that I bought from a guy several years ago for $30 or so. I still have almost 2 pounds left.
It's stenciled on the can in black BullsEye Lot 463
I dunno how old it is, but it still works good. I really don't like the pop up top, either.

Powder that old. Best not to use it. Tell you what though. If you send it to me I'll make sure it's properly disposed of. ;)

I take it you guys just don't use a lot of Bullseye. Go ahead, ship it to me. I'll burn it up faster...

Oh, but I got a new mold for my .45 acp, and it seems to cause the powder to disappear magically....Sometimes the .45 Colt cartridges do the same thing... Must be the "Twilight Zone" factor....

I found a tin of Bullesye that I must have bought back in the 60's or 70's a couple of weeks ago in a closet in the gun room. It still works just like it always did. I always prefered to use Herco for my 41's and 44's...anyone got a spare 25 pound keg of that stuff available?

I have a metal keg of Herco (maybe 1lb left) with the metal spring cap. Push it in the middle and the claws release, squeeze the side claws and they grip the spout again. Don't know how old that is, but I'll keep the keg when it's empty.

I started reloading in 1967 and I recently finished off a yellow can of DuPont 4198 I bought that first summer of reloading. It still shot very tight groups. I basically kept it in a dry closet all these years. Anybody in Western New York want to buy a lot of linotype? A friend is getting out of casting and has a bunch. WW's work fine for me; lino blends I've tried were too hard for my purposes.

I still working on a large 15lb. keg of Unique that I got at the big Tulsa gunshow many years ago, I don't think they make the 15 pounders anymore. I also have a smaller keg of AL5 I got from my grandpa many years ago, the cardboard keg is foil lined. I ziplock bag my powder to help keep it dry when it comes in slip top cardboard kegs. Now I buy most of my powder in 8 lb. plastic jugs, I hope the plastic does not breakdown over time. I too don't much care for the pull up plastic spouts. I always thought that Bullseye was one of the fastest powders on the market, now I see burn rate charts that list Red Dot as faster, what's up?

Alliant still lists Bullseye as faster than Red Dot. I think you can trust their assessment.

Hard to beat bullseye in 45 acp with a 230 gr. boolit....Really good stuff..

I hear Bullseye is now slower burning than it used to be. It makes sense as I had to up the load in my 45 long slide a couple of tenths, to get it to function reliably when I purchased a new can. The old stuff was in a 8lb keg 15 yrs old. Also 2400 is now faster than the old stuff. I had read it, and now believe it. I had to back off a grain in my Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 mag when going to a new can as the cases extracted hard.

OP peaked my interest, so I went out in the shop and checked my can of BE that I bought in about '60 for a lot number. No lot number, but a price tag of $2.25 -- Metal square can, mostly yellow with a metal snap lid -- good as new --

I just priced a pound of Bullseye at retail, they wanted $21.89 for it. Yikes!

Packaging like that was in the 50's when I started reloading, don't recall when it changed.

Try $35.00 canadian for the same product ? Your price plus 20%. Hows that for a disensentive to the shooting sports?

I don't like it at all!! I would swallow hard, mutter to myself, lay the money down, and shoot it. Fortunately, Bullseye is a very economical powder.

I feel for our North of the Border citizens. Especially shooters and those in need of serious medical attention. The commies in charge here want to do the same with medicine and eliminate the shooting sports altogether, as well as criminalize gun owners.

Major complaint with Bullseye is that it doesn't fill up the case which could result in a double charge with disasterous results! Therefore: NO DISTRACTIONS!!!!!

I don't worry about it too much. I have a VERY strict and orderly set of checks I perform on every round of ammo before it gets a boolit seated on the powder charge. Not to say I won't ever a double charge. Just that I keep double checkin' and it keeps going bang with no problems.

I was given a square metal can of Bullseye yesterday, it is an 11 oz. can. The sticker said $2.55, that was a while back I guess. It was from a local shop but out of business for many years. I will probably shoot it up and keep the can but it will take a while because a little bullseye goes a long way.
