I looked at an 1892 44-40 rifle today. 24" barrel, cresent butplate, decent wood, blued receiver, case hardened lever, replaced extractor and loading gate, maybe good bore - looked at though it would clean up.
Appeared to have had a bad case of rust and looked like it had been derusted with a wire wheel - light scratched lenghtwise on the barrel, more than light scratches on the receiver with heavier scratches, not from a wire wheel, also on the receiver. Has been rendered of vertually no value as a collectable. Could be reblued. Could not tell what shape the internals are in. The action felt smooth.
I believe that it might be made into a shooter.
They would not come off $795, I walked away. Should I go Back?
