I just picked up about 1000 pounds of solder drippings today from a couple Radiator shops and im wondering what type of solder they use? Hopefully I will be set for a while with tin.:-D

Mike - I would think you are fixed for life. Oh, and so are your children. Congrats. Mike

Mike: My local shop uses 60/40 solder. It's good stuff to have a pile of.

A way to find out is to ask the guy that does the radiator repairs if you can see the package of tin that he uses. When I did the info was on the box. It was 60% lead 40% tin. A little goes a long way. One 1.5 lb muffin ingot is good for 50 lbs of WWs.

Mike, #9 WW +#1 solder = Lyman No2 alloy. My favorite for handguns. Good score.----dale

iirc 40-60 is what it is they use. the cheapest they can get that will work.
i just put a half pound of the mix in a 40 lb pot and call it good.

The shop I frequent uses 60/40 (60% Sn) as indicated on the spool.

I get about 25 pounds of clean ingots from a single bucket load of drippings/sludge.

VERY stinky process with lots of debris! :)

You guys are fortunate. I stopped by the largest local radiator shop today to see what I could scrounge. Guy tells me he melts it back into bars and starts over. "Don't throw anything away these days" !! Can't blame him.. gotta find some more shops. Mike

In stead of going to the large radiator shops, look for the smaller, out of the way shops. They are often more willing to deal when it comes time to get rid of their waste. "One man's trash is another man's treasure."

I went to 3 radiator shops several months ago. I found 3 empty buildings. Plastic and alu. radiators don't need soldering.

That's right.

The sorry pieces of crap are crimped together.

Just replaced one in my car, hence the poor attitude.
