I finally finished restoring a nearly junk Rem. 12c made in 1910. An older, retired neighbor from down the street brought it over last fall and asked if I wanted it. It was covered with rust, was missing both forend screws, had a bulge in the barrel and just about no rifling left. He also said the chamber was eroded from a steady diet of shorts. I had always wanted to try lining a barrel, so I offered him $20 for it, figuring I could get my $20 back from parting it out if I couldnt save it. Over the winter I lined it, made the missing screws, soaked the oil out of the stock and finished it, put in about 8 hours draw filing the barrel and action and polishing the other parts and then low pressure glass beaded all the metal (for a rust blue look) and finally, blued it. I had been watching ebay for a peep sight for it but got sticker shock when I saw some go for over $200, so I made a longer sight to go in the barrel dovetail, to gain a couple inches of sight radius, and put a peep hole in it instead of a notch like the original. The gun shoots surprisingly well, so the groundhogs better watch out this summer.
Here are a few before and after pictures:

Pretty nice. I bought one at auction last year for about a hundred bucks and then doubled my money on gunbroker. I think you did a lot better though.

Yow! Very nice. You won't believe this but I have a 12C (pistol grip stock) in about the same condition. Cost: $35. My barrel isn't bulged, but is eroded. Although it shoots surprisingly well, I plan on lining it. A project waiting to happen. You got me thinking about it again!

Lurking around somewhere I have a NIB Redfield click adjustable receiver sight for that rifle. You will have to drill and tap the left rear side of the receiver to mount it. If you want it I will take $80.00 including postage. I believe it will also fit the Model 25 (25-20 and 32-20)

Very nice work. Fixing up these oldtimers is even better than buying a new gun. You get the gun and the sense of accomplishment. RD

Congrats on a job well done. What did you use to remove the oil from the wood? Also what type bluing did you use? It looks much like the rust blue finish I get after polishing to a 320-400 grit finish.
