I got a mould in trade that I can not identify the manufacturer. It is a single cavity .44 round ball. Brass colored but not heavy enough to be brass. It feels more like aluminum. Stamped on the side of each block is 195. There are no other identifying marks. Can anyone tell me anything about it?

The 195 on each block is probably a serial number to keep a matched pair together. A buddy of mine has one like that. I'll ask him about it when I see him again.

The galling of the top surface of the mold suggests aluminum to me. The caliber, .440", the contour/shape of the sprue cutter and the fact that it's aluminum, point to a Thompson/Center mold. The #195 on the blocks may also be their code for the .440" RB mold.

I have 2 T/C moulds and it looks identical except for one (vent lines)thing. One unique thing about my T/C moulds is the fact that it has vent lines on one of the mould halves only. The sprue is identical and both my moulds have one number on them only and no other identifing marks. They are mad of anodized aluminum.

What's strange about this mould is that there are no vent lines. If I hold them up to the light I can see a little light between them. I guess it vents that way.

I have two TC Molds and they are steel. They are older molds.

When did they go to Aluminum?

I've got a TC mold for a .50 Maxi ball that I bought in the late '70's. Its aluminum.

That mold is made by Shiloh. These molds rarely have any identifying number, with the only markings being the block matching numbers. They are aluminum and are usually black in color with a steel sprue plate.

Thompson sold molds were made by both Lyman (steel) and Shiloh (Aluminum) Shiloh is no longer in the business of manufacturing molds.

So it's a rare item then?

No, not rare, but in good shape they usually sell pretty well on ebay. Usually about $15-25 plus shipping.
