The twist of the rifling will have a LOT to do with what bullets you can use in the whisper. A quick twist will allow you to use very heavy slugs like 200 plus grainers. Lighter bullets CAN bde used on smaller deer with good effect. Your boys ability to hit the deers vitals will also come into play. http://www.300whisper.com/ This is a page on the Whisper that should interest you. The whisper can do great work on deer with several different weight bullets though!

The 125 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip is a good bullet for the .300 Whisper. I was present when one of the first animals killed with a .300 Whisper was taken with one out in Wyoming on an antelope hunt back in 1993. Properly loaded and properly shot it is a 200 yard load, and does a fine job on antelope and smaller deer. For a new, young hunter I would probably limit things to 150 yards to insure good shot placement. And make sure to remember the camera so you can capture that BIG grin when he gets his first deer!

As glen said, the nosler balistic tip boat tail works very well over a full charge of H110.
