I have been loading 2400 in the .30-30 under a Lyman
311041 173gr. bullet and it works very well and quite accurate.
Today I wanted to load some RCBS 150 gr cast with 2400.

There is not one single load listed in any book I have for
2400 under a 150gr cast bullet!!

I found two load listings for 125-130gr. cast and a bunch for
170-180 gr cast bullets.

Why nothing for the 150???

Has anyone have data for or experience with the 150gr.cast using 2400?
Thanks for your help. :?

14-16 grains. Consider, strongly, poly filler. ... felix

The original 1958 Cast Bullet handbook lists 20 grains under the 311466 (150 grain) shooting 1 1/2" at 100 yards. That's what I'm going to use in a Savage 340.

15 grs 2400 with the 150's works quite well.

Never loaded that combo so uncharted territory to me.

I have an OLD Ideal Hand Book that lists the following in 30-30:
154 gr GC.... 18 gr 2400..... 2100 fps
154 gr GC.... 21 gr 2400..... 2400 fps.... MAX

Believe I'd try something like Felix' suggested loads

I cast the Lee C309-150-F which is nearly identical to the RCBS boolit for use in .30/30. I load 15.5 grains of 2400 under it for 1,739 fps average in my Marlin 30AS.

I have a 2004 version of the Alliant Reloaders' Guide that lists a .30/30 load of 16.0 grains of 2400 as max under a 152 grain cast gas check boolit in the Silhouette section. Pressure is listed as 33.3 copper units. I'd be very cautious going a whole lot further than that.

Thanks guys, I shoot 15gr of 2400 under the 311041 Lyman 173 (actual wt. 185gr.)
and it seems to be a fine load. I have not chrono`d it though. I think I will try the same load under the RCBS 150gr.GC bullet and see how it goes.

How do you like that mold? Does it drop bullets at .309? I am new at this and I have read that many molds for 30-30 are .311. So will the .309 cause leading?
Are there any tips you might pass along regarding the Lee C309-150-f?
Thanks

Mine is an ancient 1 hole mold that actually drops .312 with a nose that engraves rifling on my 30AS. I've always thought that it was an anomaly and it was unlikely that I'd buy one today that drops that large. I could be wrong though and the new 2 holes are cheap enough to find out with. Anyway, I've tried .308, 9, 10, 11 and unsized. My Marlin shoots best with the .311 sizing and quenched boolits. Note that before you use something that large, you have to make sure there is room in the chamber for the case neck to release it on firing. Since the nose engraves rifling, I have to load them short (2.410 OAL) or the lever can get tough to close.

It's my favorite mold for .30/30 even though it's slow as all get out casting a single hole. The RCBS 150 looks identical in pictures. If this mold ever gets damaged or worn out, I'll probably try that
