I'm listening. But maybe 25 lbs is all I need. Whatever it takes to fill a Priority Mail box.

I'd be in for 25 pounds or so, as long as it is ~ .50 per pound.

Woowa! easy guys! Quit flooding my message box! This wax is straight from the bees so to speak. Does still have the dead critters in it. Unfortunately, do to the fact I live in the frozen north the bee keeper I get this stuff from won't be up and running until about late april. I will call him tomorrow and see if we can lock in a quantity and a rough date of delievery. I would drive to the place, pick it up and mail it out. Sound good?

I would go for 50 pounds at 15 cents a pound.

I checked out shipping 54 pounds from ZC 49931 to ZC 85641. (Vail, Arizona)

Guessing box size at 18x12x12 and 54 total weight, insured for 50 bucks:

USPS $34.77 Seven days in transit - -

UPS $49.97 Four days in transit - -

Now if you would make the beeswax into wax tablets and write something on them, we could use Media Mail for only $21.80! :bigsmyl2: :kidding:

Dan let me know when you go to get it as im only 90 miles from you and would run up and get it myself to save you the bother and me the shipping cost. Hell if you can get it for that ill take you to lunch while im up there. As a matter of fact if im going to take the truck up anyway put me down for 200 lbs. might as well get enough to make lube to last a year or two

I wish you fellers would say "Beeswax" instead of "Bee Wax". You're making me nervous just thinkin' of a single BEE that would be big enough to make hundreds of pounds of bee wax... :veryconfu

I happen to have a one pound block of beeswax (without dead bodies in it) sitting on my bench.

To help estimate shipping costs, the dimensions are 5" X 3-3/4" X 1-1/2". That works out to 21.5 cubic inches.

The Postal Service Flat Rate Box is 5-1/2" X 11" X 8" which is 484 cubic inches.

Dividing 484 by 21.5 says that the Flat Rate Box will hold about 22 pounds of wax...if you put a plastic bag in it and pour it nearly full.

I'm not interested in buying any as I have a local source. But, I thought the numbers might help you guys figure your deal out.

Count me in for 25 or 30 pounds here. As long as its bees wax I can get the impurities out. I have been in trouble before for using a pair of the wife"s panty hose and the big pot she used to cook corn on the cob to clean up wax. What's one more wap from the rolling pin on the head for another stupid thing I have done? Hey ... maybe I'm starting to like it more than I used to.

Seems the yuppies found out about my wax source and are now 'patroninzing' the buisness, they also drove the wax price up to 2.50 a pound. Seems they desicrate this precious resource by making candles or somethin from it...blasphemy! thats free market trade fer ya... [smilie=b: There are some other bee keepers around here I'll ask. damn the bad luck.

Just curious, what are you guys using beeswax for?

Murphy
03-01-2006, 08:19 PM
Ivan,

Beeswax is the base for just about every 'home made' bullet lube I'm aware of. There are many different recipes you will find using beeswax as the main ingredient. When and how it all started? I haven't a clue. But I have learned that much since being here.

Beeswax and alox....(a chemical) has been an old standby for many, many years to the best of my knowledge.

Many now use beeswax and moly graphite as a mixture for a bullet lube. The list is endless.

Hope this is of some help, and .........Welcome aboard Ivan, I think you'll find a great deal of information here, plus enjoying the sharing of experience surrounding the cast boolit.

Respectfully,

Murphy

Beeswax is also indespensible for lubricating crossbow strings and flats, besides the making of candles. Most small beekeepers have lots of it and it's a RPITA for them to get rid of, at least in New England. I have a hard time believing that there aren't many others in other parts of the country/world. The bigger producers make a (god forbid) profit selling it, but the others should respond to a positive inquiry. I had a great source of it before he retired, but there are lots of small producers who are only interested in making honey. They must have their own forums, too. Organic farmers, etc., bulletin boards at feed stores and farmers exchanges, be creative!

i'm working on finding another source, there are a few smaller bee keepers around, but they pretty much lay low until spring comes around.

When I sent out around 1000 lbs last summer, I could comfortably fit 10lbs in a flat rate box. With some trimming and stuffing, I could get 12.5lbs in a box.
No I'm not selling anymore, I'm down to about 500lbs ish.

The local bee keepers here want around $5-6 a lb for the end caps they cut off that are full of (&*(^. The craft store here wants $14 a lb for it.
There is a place online texasdrone.com that sells for just over $3 a lb last time I looked.

If you do go ahead with the mass beeswax buy, they you can get the flat rate boxes delivered right to your house. Just go on to usps.gov . they have a section to order supplies. The long boxes come with the adhesive flaps on the end. It might not sound like much to just get some packing tape to do the boxes up with, but by the time you go through 8 rolls of tape at $3.50 ea, the little extras start to add up in a hurry.

As far as melting beeswax goes, I've gound that on my gas stove top, with the burner turned down to low, it is just the right temp to melt it and not get hot enough to burn. This way you don't have to use a double boiler.

For cutting. If I leave my slabs in the sun for a couple of hours, then I can take a big french knife and cut 1/5" slices off of it fairly easy.
When it's frozen in the winter, I can put them in a heavy plastic bag and slam it down on the garage floor. This breaks it up into nice small useable pieces.

take care.
Glenn.

On melting beeswax, some people use an old crock pot-not your Missus's good one!

Urny
03-18-2006, 09:30 AM
An old crock pot is how I melt mine. Bought herself a new one and just took the 20 year old pot out to the garage. The hatchet works for cutting them up; my side of the garage is full of wax chips that will one day be gathered and melted down. Quarter pounder loaf pans work for pouring the wax ingots, and Christmas time popcorn tins are great for storage of the ingots. Got one tin filled up and working on the second.

I've contacted a fellow that I know is a beekeeper and sells the wax. His supply is currently exhausted but there will be more. Am leaving it up to him as to whether he posts here as I wouldn't want him overwhelmed with requests - that's his call to make.

The $2.50/lb already mentioned is a pretty good price based upon what I'm seeing out there.

Fact is most all the bees wax on sale at E Bay is selling for 3.00 plus a pound. Got to be one stupid bee keeper to sell for less than 1.50 a pound as bee keeping supply houses pay that for old dark crappy stuff as well as the clean cappings. Thats why you see the nice stuff on E bay.
I'll have some wax at the end of July for 3.50 a pound plus shipping of course. You choose the method of shipping.

I would love to squirrel away about 50 pounds of it myself if the price was decent and the seller wasn't trying to put the kids through college on the shipping overcharges.,, yes I am cheap, but willing to pay fair price for it cause I have drawn a blank around here.
