I used 23 gr H4227 under the 429421 for many years. It colcks 1210 fps out of 6-6.5" barreled revolvers. Always extremely accurate and no leading with Javelina lube.

My standard load for the 44 Magnum since the 1960s has been 25 gr. IMR4227 under a Keith 429421 water quenched WW bullet sized 0.4305". My flaring die is modified to only bell the case mouth and not re-expand the case mouth. The bullet expands the case slightly as it is seated into the case and the powder charge is compressed slightly. The case is then crimped with a hard roll crimp. At each reloading session, every case is trimmed to standard lengths to insure consistant bullet release. Started lubing with 50/50 Beeswax/Alox2138F, but now use LBT blue. I've never got leading and chrono'd velocity is 1350 fps. Long range accuracy is outstanding and this is one helluva lethal load. Recoil is not as sharp as with 2400 powder and with good grips the follow-up shots are back on target quickly. and smoothly.

This load of 25 gr. was Lyman's most accurate load for the 44 Magnum when they still use to fire at paper targets and measure group sizes. Today they measure velocities and the load with the lowest standard deviation in velocity is their "accurate load". Yeh right! Later on, Lyman reduced this load to 24 gr.

I used to shoot this load year around in all kinds of weather; rain, snow, etc. What I discovered shooting over snow was interesting. The snow in front of me was peppered with unburned IMR4227. Recovered bullets, which were tough to get because this bullet is such an awesome
penetrator, showed no melting of the bullet base. The unburned powder, from this compressed powder load, was obviously protecting the bullet base from excessive heat and improving accuracy.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

CJR

These last messages have been a great help to this new caster. Do any of you know if there are any GB for 44 bullets at this time? I am still trying to learn this site.
I have a Ruger RH 44 on the way. An i am getting real impatient. Its been about 6 weeks
I really appreciaty all you have given me. I intend to start with a 200gr bullet an Clays 5gr to 6gr for a starting load. I have the clays so that is where i am starting

Much heavier than you are talking about here, you will find that accuracy with the 44 starts with the 240-250 grain boolits on the light side and goes up, at least with the Redhawk you are talking about. The 200 grain will make a fine plinker though.
