Can anybody suggest a good mould for a .30-30 ackley imp.? I would like a gas check, at least 170grn. Ive never cast for a rifle. Lots of handguns though. Thanks to any and all that can point me in the right direction. May also use in .308 win.

If this is for a lever action you will need a flat nose like the Lyman 311041. 211291 is also for the 30-30 but it is a round nose. I have better accuracy with 311041. Both weigh about 170 to 180grs. depending on the alloy and are gas-check designs.

Can't go wrong with the 311241, even better when it is hollow pointed. However, don't overlook the 150 lee flat nosed GC. An ugly looking blt, but shoots well in all of my 30's, and it saves 20 gr. or lead. Can drive the 150 without leading in my 94 30-30 to 2100-2200 with no problem and good accuracy.
Good luck!

Haveing shot the 311466 in a 3030 Ackley and attained great accuracy, I'd highly recommend it!

And for a heavier boolit, the 311041 works superbly too in the 3030Ackley.

For a real Golly Whomper, try the 311284!

I'd be surprised if it was a lever action 3030 Ackley IMP. :)

My guess is a Contender or Encore. :)

I don't think Encore or Contender were around when P.O. started Improving things...

Its on a Marlin 336. Ive been loading 170 jacketed to about 2400 f.p.s., great deer load. Just wanted to cast for it. Whatever i choose, it will be water dropped w.w. and will be used to load in a 308 also. With todays government you cant be too sure of anything! Ive got moulds for my 45/70 and all the handguns, I plan on being just fine if things go against us gunowners.

Here's a side by side look at four different cast bullets for lever actions.

I have no experience with 30-30 Ackley, but own a Win 94 in 25-35 Ackley. One problem I have had with cast is that the Ackley series of cartridges shortens the neck a good bit and bullet base sits below the neck when heavier bullets are used that will feed in levers. My 25-35 Ackley will shoot 85-90 gr. lead pretty nice, but the 115-120 gr. bullets don't do well because the base extends below the neck. I would guess that you should stay with the stubby bullet designs so that the bullet base doesn't extend below the neck. Just my experience.
