It's an old H&R action, and the Ctg. is the one in the middle, it's a .38 S&W run into a .30 Luger sizer, it makes a rimmed cartridge, which should work easier with the extractor.

I had thought of a 32-20, but I already have a 32-20 Marlin that shoots VERY well. I really wanted a tiny case. If there is room for more powder, I tend to want to put it in..[smilie=1:

The 32 S&W, and 32 S&W Long were also in the running. The steel in this old H&R action is about 3 on the Rockwell scale , so I don't want to push it.

Well, I just measured a 9mm, (same case head as .30 Luger), and one of my .38 S&W's. My examples are within .001" or so. The length is very close also. I just plan on running the .38 S&W into the .30 Luger, giving me a very short, bottleneck case, in .30 cal., with a rim for the single shot action.

The one I have in the pic was kind of cobbled together, and the neck is a little longer than it will be. It has a RCBS 98 gr. SWC in it.

Another cartridge that works well for this is a 38 spl run into a 7.62X25 tokerev die. I like it 'cause 38 spl. brass is a lot cheaper than 38 S&W, and you get a nice long neck to hold the bullet well.

Definetly an interesting project! Both rifle and cartridge. Keep us posted on your progress. Neil

Don't forget to bush the firing pin hole and make a smaller firing pin. As is they will back out into the firing pin hole. I made one up for a buddy in 218 bee and it is a dandy.

Very good Doug, you're close. It's the same era as the Handy Gun, but isn't stamped as one. I think it's a model 1905, or 1915. H&R made these with very short barels as an option, like 8-1/2" or 12". This was a shorty, and the shop that had it destroyed the barrel for legal reasons.

I have to re-work the tang, but it will be a conventional rear stock. I already have the blank. The way it's shaped now, it looks like it could have had either the buttstock, or the pistol grip like the Handy Gun.

Yeah, the pin hole looks to be on the generous side.[smilie=1: I didn't figure a hardened bushing would be a bad idea anyways. I ordered the barrel blank, and dies today, so maybe I will have some lathe work for next weekend.
