I`m looking for a mold that will work for the 38/40, with a crimp groove in the right place. Are any of the 10mm/ .40 suitable? only one i have found yet is RCBS 180gr. CB I was looking at a multigroove Lee, wonder if you could crimp in top groove??

The 40s won't have any crimping groove. Come to think of it, aren't most people crimping the 38-40 into the bullet anyway? I know there are dedicated 38-40 moulds out there for the cowboy shooters. Lyman still offers the 401043

thanks....how do the Saeco compare in quality to the rcbs? I have one of the old loading tools with the mold on the end, but no crimp groove.

IMO There about equal with the edge going to Saeco!!

I haven't bought any molds in quite a while and have read here and other places that quality from all the major manufactures has falling a little. So you take your chances with all.

I have a Lyman 401143 that works well in .40 S&W with WW's and .38-40 with pure lead. I load the .38-40 with an old Ideal #4 tool and then use a Lee factory crimp die.

I`m going to be feeding them through a Marlin 1889, everything I`ve read says you need either a good crimping groove, or a cannelore below to stop them being pushed deeper into case. Most of the older molds were for a full case of BP, and didnt need the support. After reading several posts, most of you seem satisfied with current production RCBS molds, as far as quality goes, so I`m thinking of going with the 180gr. cowboy, the 190 Saeco looks good too, just a little more $
