I 'm just starting to develop a load for my 336 in 30-30 and am wondering what mold I should buy for this gun? I am looking for a heavier bullet and I like wide meplats for deer hunting, so what are you guys using. I have a load for my 45-70, 33 wcf,35 rem,and 300 savage(it will need a little tweaking yet) so it's not like I can't find a levergun to shoot but i CAN'T HAVE A GUN THAT DOESN'T HAVE "THE LOAD" FOR IT YOU KNOW. Thanks guys. Tom

RCBS 30-180FN

It's available now at Midsouth for under 70 bucks, so you'd better get one (or two even) while the gett'n is good.

Actually, I don't know why RCBS didn't call it 30-190FN because it'll go over that weight by a couple grains in clip-on WW metal and in my 50/50 alloy bullets weigh just under 200 grains gaschecked. BTW, if you're thinking 50/50 alloy is too soft, it'll HT to BHN 29.

I use the Lyman 311041 173 gr in my 30-30s and they shoot well. I have used it with WW for deer and the animal died very fast when I put one through the lungs. Can't ask more than that.

Lots of folks are happy with Ranch Dogs molds for the Marlin, but I think he was having trouble keeping them in stock.
You might check his site.

No advice on 30-30 moulds but a question for you , Ford. Would you share your .300 Sav. load info. I am struggling with that one.
Thanks,
Dan

If you can get the Ranch Dog(he will have more in July) mould get it. Next would be the standards, 311041,311291(I know it's a RN), and RCBS 30-180-FN. If you can get your hands on a Lyman 311440 get it too. I know it isn't heavy, but it is a classic.

I own 3 Ranch Dog molds. 45-70 420 gr 2 hole, 32Ws two hole, and the .311 6 hole.
Haven't had a chance to try them in a hunt yet, but I have plinked with the .30 cal one both from a Marlin 336 and Win 94. I didn't shoot for accuracy just 8-10gr of Unique to put a few downrange to get the feel on feeding etc.
I am pleased to say the least.

Before you invest in a mould, you would be well-advised to borrow an assortment of boolits from people locally or on this board and try them in the throat of your 336. Many may not fit without being seated excessively deep in the case. I have maybe a dozen different .30 caliber moulds, and only 3 of them were practical for use in my 336. 311041, 3118, and the GB Loverin were the only ones that would chamber without extending far below the shoulder of the case.

I have a Lee 150-160 gr. GC mold RN that won't even feed out of the tube magazine. Little disappointed in that!

In my 336 30/30 I'm shooting a bullet from a group buy on this board. It is the .311-155 GC. It is a flatnose bullet with 3 crimping grooves for different cartridges. I size them to .3095 and seat in the furthest crimp groove over 20 grains of IMR 4198. Velocity is around 1650 to 1700 fps. On target they shoot into an inch at 50 yards and a little less than 2 inches at 100 yards. I took 2 deer with this bullet and load last deer season. Both deer dropped on the spot with complete pass through and no recovered bullets. If you would like to try some of these bullets let me know and I will get some to you.

The RCBS 30-180 FN shoot a little better than the Lyman 311041 for me in a Marlin 336-A, 24 inch barrel with ballard rifling.

RCBS 180FN, Lyman 311041 or the RanchDog. I really do have to buy a couple RD moulds, love the look of them.

RCBS 30-150-FN works very well in my Marlin 336 .30-30

My 24" barreled 1977vintage really likes the RCBS 180 FN and the 311466, a round nose. The 1963 edition Sporting Carbine shoots the LBT 310165 best because the bore is a little larger on it.
