Question about SR7625 powder.....

I was given a pound of it. There are plenty of loads listed in my load books for this powder in the handgun cartridges I load. However, in looking at "Pet Loads" by Ken Waters, he gives a thumbs down for SR7625 in every cartridge I looked at. Usually poor accuracy. Sometimes pressure signs in combination with low speeds.

Any ideas? What is SR7625 best for?

PS. I was given a pound of W540 (now HS-6) by the same guy a while back. I got recommendations here and tried it in the .32 Long and .32 Magnum. It was better than what I had been using before. It is a sweet powder for those two. I have not tried it in the 32-20 or .38 Special yet, since I have accurate loads for those already, but it would probably work well in those too.

SR7625 is above w231-hp38 on my burn chart , so it`s fairly fast burner!!!
SR is Small Rifle so i`m thinking 221 fireball or 17 REM type small rifle????
sure would`nt try to get much more than plinking or low pressure target loads out of a handgun cartridge though , like Mr. Waters wrote it gets a little pressure spiky when in cramped quarters, which is a characteristic of fast powders.

Good powder for 357 Mag. I bought a large amount at an estate auction and have used it in everything from 38 Special, 45 ACP, to 22 Hornet and buckshot loads in 12 ga. DALE

I have a friend who gave me some of it due to it's inconsistency batch to batch. He was using it for 38 supercomp in a hybrid ported open division IPSC gun. I always thought that this one was in the range of Herco or Win 540, since it is listed mainly as a shotgun high velocity field powder with loads in the 1 1/8 to 1 1/4 ounce range using lead. I do believe it also has applications in the smaller 20 and possibly 28 gauge range. The powder from IMR faster than it was PB, and slower than it is SR4756.

I have yet to tap into what I have mostly due to not needing that specific load range currently. If I run out of whatever I'm using, I will likely turn to this one at that time.

Perhaps I can just use it in shotgun shells. I haven't loaded them for 15-20 years, but I am just about out of the bunch of 16ga that I loaded back then. Time to start loading them again.

It should work good for field loads in 16 gauge, if Remington has data for it.

It's the best powder I've found for 1 1/4 oz. loads in 12 ga. Good patterns, good velocity, low pressure, low felt recoil.

I recall an article in Handloader magazine by Ross Seifried about using SR 7625 in low pressure loads for damascus barreled shotguns.

As far as I know all the SR prefix dupont powders stood for SPORTING RIFLE, not service rifle or small rifle. I have shot sr 7625 in 38,357, 9luger, 06 and 223 all with cast, probably a few I've forgotten too, oh in 12 ga 1 1/8 oz also. I consider it fast lot Unique, but have seen it on burn rate charts as a couple spaces faster and a couple spaces slower(not that uncommon)

I use it in:

.41 Magnum mid-range loads, 6.7 gr under a 210-220 Keith at about 900 fps. Very accurate.

.223 Rem., 6.0 gr under a Hornady 50 gr SX J-word at about 1900 fps for squirrels. Fired from a Rem. 788 bolt action, it's incredibly accurate, reasonably quiet and doesn't tear up the squirrel.

12 ga 1-1/8 oz using a WW A-A hull and WAA12 wad. Don't remember the powder weight, but it's in the neighborhood of 26 gr. Low recoil, low pressure. In the old tan Dupont handloader's pamphlet, it was about the lowest pressure load listed. I think it ran about 1200 fps and made a great small game/upland load.

I've also used it in .45 Colt, .45 ACP, .357 Mag. and . 32 H&R with varying success.

SR7625 is one of the cleanest buning powders in 20 gauge 1 oz. loads. It is also great for 10 gauge 1-1/4 oz. loads in 2-7/8" shells.

The first 12 gauge shotshells I ever loaded 45 years ago was with SR-7625 and a 29922 Remington wad.

Def. slower than some shotshell powders and used for med. loads in 12 ga. and as mentioned capable of low pressure 12 ga. loads that could be used in old/Damascus barrels. Not popular since lead loads were outlawed for duck hunting and in that respect similar to the slower 4756.

In the 32 Auto I found this powder cleaner burning than Red Dot or Win 231. Much less residue on the cases.

Same load I use, but I haven't found ANY for more than a year. Still looking.
