I have a friend who is looking for 8x56R Hungarian Mannlicher brass, BUT, he is looking for milsurp , Berdan primed brass, not the Boxer primed commercial brass.
If anyone has some and would like to sell it for a reasonable scrap price, $5-8 per hundred , plus shipping, please PM me.

I ordered a case of the 8x56R in stripper clips from SOG last year. The picture showed brass cases and the description said nice, clean ammo. When I got it the ammo was steel cased and had a bit of rust on the caes and clips. It wasn't worth the hassle to return it so I cleaned it. If I were to order it again I'd call and find out exactly what I was getting.

Cole Distributing (www.coledistributing.com) is another source of brass case 8x56R. Their prices are:

150 rounds - $ 37.50
450 " - 105.00
900 " - 199.95

Due to problems shipping loaded ammo to Alaska, unreal shipping costs, it is only economically feasable to mail empty brass.
He has a tool kit I made him to convert Berdan primed brass to Boxer, so he just needs some empty cases.

Don... Nick, my son, has a bunch of Berdan mauser cases made with exceptional quality brass. Would like to borrow your kit to fix these dudes up. PM me, please, about particulars. No hurry for the device because he has at least 500 unfired rounds left, perhaps a 1000. He can do a couple of hundred, and we will pass the device on to the next fellow needing the left over brass. Sundog loaned us 50 cases, I made 50 cases from 06, and a couple of hundred using your device should be sufficient. ... felix

.............I'll check and see how many unaltered empties I have. I converted a bunch to 209 shotshell primers.

Buckshot,

Notto hijack a thread, but how do you convert a berdan case to use 209s? I presume it would be limited to low pressure loads? I have piles of berdan primed 8X57mm brass that I could use for low pressure loads if I could convert them to a useable primer.

Thanks

.................Singleshotbuff, It's a pretty simple operation. You drill right through the spent primer with a #4 centerdrill. Happily the #4 is almost the exact size of the batterycup flange. Drill just deep enough to form a ledge so that the flange will sit flush or just below the fase of the base.

After they've all been centerdrilled you finally use a (number bit I don't recall off-hand) but it's about .002" under the battery cups' OD. When drilling use a lube like kerosene or WD-40. Just a spritz works great and produces a slick clean surface.

While shotguns run about 12K psi, the primer will handle more, but there IS a lower limit then the correct primer.

I have Remington and Federal primers, the Rem. are .241", the Fed. are .243"
The closest drill bit is a "B", .238".

You guys have too much time on your hands converting all that brass, I only do it for calibers that you can't get easily.

I have a few cases, probably less than 20 originals fired, I got 50 rounds with my gun, just so I'd have some clips (I'd like some more clips).

Since I hate corrosive ammo, I ordered 100 pieces Brass from Graf's and decided to be done with it. Before that, I had 20 pieces of the Bertram brass, but it's not as sturdy as the Graf's. I still shoot it, and will until I wear it out, I paid more for that Bertram 20 pieces than 100 Graf's!

Out of an M95 Carbine, 3 rounds of Factory ammo (late 30's, don't remember if German or Austrian) thru the Chrono was 2390, 2359, and 2380, movin pretty fast I'd say.

I'll ask around and see if anyone I know has some empties for you.

Buckshot,

I googled converting 7.62x54R brass to 8x56 Hung and I found a thread on Gunboards about a fella named Buckshot converting his M95 to 30-40 Krag Would that be you? Nice picures and explanation if it was. Almost makes me want to pick one up and do the same for a Carbine in 303 Brit.

..........Yup, that was me. A very simple straightforward deal. Painless. The new (old) stock (for a rifle) was $15 at GPC.

I was talking to my Century Arms rep about buying something one time and he said, "We also have some nice M95's that just came in and we're blowing them out at $59 if you're interested". I said okay include one of those. This is what $59 bought:

I did NOT use this one for the conversion! I had a beater $39 with a sewerpipe for a bore. I also have a pretty nice M95/30 but the one above is all matching. Not common for them to serialize the barrel and barrel bands either.

There are a couple other guys around here with conversions on the M95 Steyr. I think one is in 444 Marlin. I'd thought of a 40 cal myself using the Krag case blown out straight.

.............j4570, re, the case conversions. It sure wasn't done for fun :-). At the time, it was convert the ex-milsurp, convert 45-70 (which I did 10 of), or suffer the use of 7.62x54R. That is, if you wanted to reload as there was nothing else out there to use.

When you consider that that is a 208gr slug out of a 19" tube, you can bet your bippy it's pretty impressive ballistics! Look at some 308 data.
