I was just sitting here thinking about how Id like to learn how to paper patch me some boolits for my 30-30. I got to thinking about muzzle loaders. According to an online ballistics chart I found with Thompson Centers suggested loads, a .50 cal muzzleloader with a 175 grain round ball with 100 grains of FF and a patch lubricated with T/C no. 13 lube leaves the muzzle at 2052 fps.
Lymans 49 th edition reloaders handbook states that a 170 grain #2 alloy will have 1575 fps with IMR-4227 (accuracy load).
So what I am wondering is if a lubed muzzle loader patch would hold up and be an acceptable substitute for a paper patch and gas check in the faster twist barrel of the 30-30.
Am I on to something here or is it the stupidest thing you have heard today?
