I know this is a longshot.

I have a box of Midway extra hard cast bullets. I bought it in the early nineties. I was wondering if any of you knew from what alloy these bullets were cast. I emailed Midway and they said the company that made them went out of business and they had no other info on them. When I tested one it had a BHN of 17.9. I wish to alloy them with my WW's and need some idea of their composition. Thanks in advance.

Does the side of the box say Dogtown on it?

No. These are .430dia 240gr BB SWC's. I thought them to be the same bullets they sell now, but they told me they aren't. http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=2046267313
It looks like the same bullet only the lube is different. I'm going to just mix it(50/50) with my other hard alloy and test it until I get the hardness I want.

You just gave me an idea. I've got a whole box of Meister 158g SWC that are sized to .357 and leaded the heck out of my guns. Their super hard too, like 24 bhn. I'm gonna melt off the lube and use them to fine turn my alloys. Was wondering what I was gonna do with them things!!!

Fit and lube are far more important to avoid leading than hardness,
and for an undersized boolit, hard is much worse since it can't bump up
to fit.

It bet they're regular old "hardball" alloy, i.e. 92/6/2. Or maybe 8 percent Sb.

I'm gonna melt off the lube

Why melt the lube off? It will flux your alloy when you do melt them down.

Ditto to dwtim's comment that they are probably 92/6/2.

2/6 usually comes out at 15-16.
airc meister is 2/6.
most commercial outfits ain't gonna order a more expensive alloy, and anything other then lead, lino, and 2/6 [or a 50-50 mix of the other two], is gonna cost you.

2/6 and 2/7 are standard bullet alloy stocked by Mayco. Your BHN measurement would be from a 2/7 alloy.

I talked to a man at Magnus bullets. I asked him if it could be one of his. He said if it had been bought from Midsouth instead of Midway yes. We discussed the alloy he used at the time and he advised he was using 2/8 then. I wonder if Midway ever bought any bullets from Midsouth. If I remember right these were on closeout at the time. This is exactly what the bullets look like. http://magnusbullet.powweb.com/store/page7.html I know this mould is common, but this could easily be a picture of these bullets.

I've got a box of 500 Oregon Trail .452 152gr SWCs that I plan to do the same thing with - use them to sweeten some Pb with. I don't know what possessed me to by them in the first place - guess I was planning to 'magnumize' some .45 ACP.

Anybody know what alloy OT uses in their Laser-Cast boolits?
