I going to purchase a mold for my 45 LC Ruger Pistol and 45 LC Winchester 94. I have been looking at the Saeco 458 255gr SWC or the Saeco 955 255gr RNFP.

Has anyone used either slug through a 45 LC Rifle? How do they feed or is there any difference between the two in a lever action rifle?

My Winchester 94 has a large chamber. You can thumb seat a 457 bullet in a fire formed case. In general I have found that:

- 457 cast bullets shoot better than 452 cast bullets
- heavier plain based cast (300gr) has shot better than lighter (250-275gr) designs
- harder (18+BHN) alloys and gas checked bullets have shot better than softer alloys (<12 BHN) and plain based bullets.

Cast boolit designs that have worked well in this carbine have been:
- Cayoot Group buy (plain based, 300gr, LFN)
- LBT 45-265-LFNgc
- Lyman 457191 (300 gr, plain based)
- Lee 457-340-F
- Lyman 457122-HP

I have 2 4 cav Saeco 955's as my family shoots a lot CA, in a 50/50 WW/Lead mix they are 260gr and sized to .454. Shot out of 3 different Rossi lever guns and to many 45C pistols to count, all function very well!!
I have given samples to many members here and at my GC, reports from GC members say they have functioned and shoot good in many lever guns including the Win. I have not had any reports from members here.
Your Win. may not likem, but I bet it will.

Every LG is different, some function well with SWC's, some don't.

You might also look at Saeco 954 a 230gr version of 955

The RCBS 45-255 SWC casts out at 268 gr from WWs and works find in my Win trapper. For my CA shooting, I use RCBS 45-230CM for Marlin & Uberti rifles and Ruger pistol's with great satisfaction.

Slugging my Win94 is a definite before ordering a mold, but my Ruger Blackhawk shoots .454 very well. I'm hoping the Winchester will too. I want to work up a single load for both guns. If the Win if oversize, I will have to go to the Saeco 015 and hollow point it to stay in the 255-265 gr range.

Calamity Jake have you ever used the 955 as a hunting round? I think it would do well on white tailed deer and hogs.

Cherokee, the RCBS is my 3rd choice. I like the design, but the last RCBS mold I accuired was not the quality of the Saeco's. Now that I have said that, I will probably get a *** Saeco mold.

Thanks, Schutzen

I use The RCBS 300 SWCGC in my 45lc Henry and it shoots fine. I am experimenting with resizing the Saeco#017 down from .458:-D

It does a number on snapping turtles. Thats the only critter I've shot with it.
It should be a real thumper with that .250+Ø milpit and 1100fps.
